What is Fax.Plus?

Fax.Plus is an online fax service. It gives you a fax number and lets you send and receive faxes without a fax machine or a phone line, from a web app, desktop and mobile apps, your email, Google and Microsoft apps, a multifunction printer, a print driver or an API. Received faxes are stored in your account as documents you can read, download and forward.

It is made by Alohi SA, a company based near Geneva, Switzerland. Alohi also makes Sign.Plus (electronic signatures), Dial.Plus (an AI phone service) and Scan.Plus (a mobile scanner app).

Fax sounds outdated, but many healthcare providers, insurers, law firms, banks and government offices still require it, especially for signed forms and medical records. The problem Fax.Plus solves is keeping that channel open without keeping a fax machine, a landline and a paper tray. You get the fax number; your team works with PDFs.

In October 2026 Fax.Plus also published a hosted Fax.Plus MCP server, so AI assistants can send and read faxes on your behalf. That is new, but the core product is still a straightforward cloud fax service.

Who it is for

  • Small offices and clinics that receive referrals, forms or orders by fax and want them as PDFs in email or an app.
  • Healthcare, legal and finance teams that need a HIPAA BAA, SSO or data residency. These are on Enterprise.
  • Remote and hybrid teams that need to send the occasional fax from a laptop or phone.
  • Businesses that are dropping a landline but want to keep their fax number through porting (Premium and above).
  • Developers who want to send or receive faxes from their own software through the Fax.Plus API (Enterprise).

Who should not use it: anyone who has not been asked for a fax in years, since the Free plan covers an occasional one-off; and teams that really need a business phone system for calls and texts. For that, see our guide to the best business phone systems.

Key features

  • Many ways to send. Web App, Desktop App, Android and iOS apps, Email to Fax, Google apps (Gmail, Drive, Docs, Sheets), Microsoft Word and Word Online, Multifunction Printer Faxing and Print-to-Fax for Windows and macOS.
  • Fax numbers. Local, toll-free (Premium and above), vanity and international numbers, with Fax Number Porting from Premium. Choosing a specific number costs a one-time $19.99, or $29.99 for a “handpicked” memorable number, at the time of writing.
  • Fax Broadcasting. Send one fax to up to 500 recipients (vendor’s features page). Multiple Fax Recipients is included from Basic.
  • Storage and logs. Unlimited Fax Storage from Basic; export fax logs to CSV and switch off fax reception from Premium.
  • Teams. Team Setup, Admin Console, Fax Numbers Management and a Slack integration from Business. Enterprise adds Single Sign-On (SSO) and Zapier.
  • AI-powered Fax. On Enterprise, AI Text Transcript turns a received fax into text and AI Data Extraction pulls out fields, using 1,000 included Alohi AI Credits a month.
  • Fax.Plus MCP. A hosted MCP server at https://mcp.fax.plus/mcp for Claude, ChatGPT and other MCP clients. It can send faxes, read received faxes, check delivery and manage contacts and numbers. Paid plans connect with OAuth; Enterprise can also use Personal Access Tokens.
  • API and security. The Fax.Plus API and Real-Time Fax Streaming are Enterprise features. The vendor lists 256-bit AES encryption, TLS 1.3 and one complimentary retry for failed faxes.

How to use Fax.Plus: step-by-step

1. Create an account and choose a plan

  1. Go to fax.plus and sign up. Start on Free if you only want to try sending.
  2. If you need to receive faxes, pick a paid plan. Basic includes one fax number; choose Premium if you need a toll-free number or want to port an existing one.
  3. Choose your fax number: take a standard number, or pay the one-time fee to choose a specific or memorable one.
  4. If you are porting a number, request porting from Premium upwards and keep your old fax line active until the port completes.

2. Send your first fax

  1. In the web app, start a new fax and enter the recipient’s fax number with the country code.
  2. Attach the document, for example a signed PDF. Keep within your plan’s maximum pages per fax (60 on Basic).
  3. Add a cover page if the recipient expects one, then send.
  4. Check the delivery status in your fax history. If a fax fails, the service offers one complimentary retry.

3. Set up email and mobile faxing

  1. Open the Email to Fax settings in your account (included from Basic) and follow the instructions there for the sending address format and which of your email addresses may send.
  2. Send a test: email your own fax number with a one-page PDF attached and confirm it arrives.
  3. Set up notifications for received faxes so you see them in your inbox without logging in.
  4. Install the iOS or Android app to send a photo or scanned page from your phone and to read incoming faxes on the move.

4. Set up a team (Business and Enterprise)

  1. Open the Admin Console and invite up to 5 members on Business, or as many as you need on Enterprise.
  2. Assign fax numbers to people or departments with Fax Numbers Management. Business includes 2 numbers; extra numbers cost $4.99 a month each.
  3. Connect the Slack integration if your team works there, and export fax logs to CSV for record keeping.
  4. On Enterprise, set up SSO, sign the BAA if you handle patient data, and choose a data residency region.

5. Optional: connect an AI assistant with MCP

  1. Use a paid plan from Basic. MCP is not available on Free or on accounts with Advanced Security Controls, which includes HIPAA and PHIPA accounts.
  2. Add the server URL https://mcp.fax.plus/mcp as a connector in your MCP client, such as Claude or ChatGPT, and sign in with OAuth.
  3. Start with read-only requests such as “list faxes received today”, then try sending a test fax to your own number.

Tips to get better results

  • Size the plan by pages, not faxes. A 12-page referral counts as 12 pages. Estimate monthly pages and compare against the allowance plus overage rate.
  • Send PDFs, not photos. Clean PDFs fax more legibly than phone photos. If you must use a photo, crop it and use a scanner app.
  • Port early. If clients already know your fax number, start porting on day one and keep the old line until it completes.
  • Use one number per department. On Business, separate numbers for billing and clinical teams stop faxes landing in the wrong inbox.
  • Turn on Automatic Top-Up carefully. It prevents failed sends when you run out of pages, but watch the bill in busy months.
  • Keep regulated data on Enterprise. If faxes include patient records, use Enterprise with a BAA rather than a cheaper plan.
  • Keep an eye on the AI assistant. With MCP, check the recipient number and document before any fax is sent.

Limitations and common problems

  • Compliance costs Enterprise money. HIPAA with a BAA, SSO, data residency, the API and Zapier all start at about $80 a month billed annually. There is no cheaper HIPAA option.
  • Single-user lower plans. Basic and Premium have one member. Sharing one login is a poor workaround; move to Business for a team.
  • Free plan is a trial in practice. Ten pages in total goes quickly, and the pricing page does not say the Free plan includes a receiving number.
  • Page caps per fax. Long documents can exceed the per-fax limit (30 pages on Free, 60 on Basic). Split them or move up a plan.
  • International rates vary. Faxing outside the US may cost more than the standard page rate.
  • MCP and HIPAA do not mix. Accounts with Advanced Security Controls cannot use MCP, so regulated teams cannot use AI assistants for faxing.
  • Retention defaults are not published. The privacy policy does not state default fax retention, so set your own deletion routine if you have retention rules.

Alternatives

  • Other online fax services such as eFax, iFax or RingCentral Fax - worth comparing on per-page price and HIPAA availability.
  • A business phone system with fax - some VoIP providers bundle fax. Compare call-focused options such as Quo, CallHippo or KrispCall, and check whether fax is included.
  • E-signature instead of fax - if the other party accepts it, a signature tool such as Alohi’s own Sign.Plus removes the need to fax a signed form.
  • A multifunction printer with a landline - only if you already have both and send very few faxes.

Verdict

Sign up for Fax.Plus if your business still has to send or receive faxes and you want them as documents in email and an app instead of on paper. Basic or Premium suits a single person, Business suits a small team, and Enterprise is the plan for anyone who needs a HIPAA BAA, SSO, the API or data residency. Estimate your monthly pages before choosing, and use the Free plan’s 10 pages to check that faxes to your usual recipients go through. Skip it if you fax only once or twice a year, or if regulated data forces you onto Enterprise and your volume is too low to justify that price.

Frequently asked questions

Is Fax.Plus free?

There is a Free plan, but it is a one-time allowance of 10 pages in total, not 10 pages a month, for one user, with up to 30 pages per fax. It is enough to test sending. The pricing page does not say whether the Free plan includes a fax number for receiving.

How much does Fax.Plus cost?

At the time of writing, billed annually, Basic costs $6.99 a month ($83.99 a year), Premium $13.99 ($167.99), Business $27.99 ($335.99) and Enterprise from $79.99 (from $959.99 a year). Monthly billing costs more: $8.99, $17.99, $34.99 and from $99.99. Prices are in US dollars and exclude tax.

Is Fax.Plus HIPAA compliant?

Fax.Plus offers HIPAA compliance with a Business Associate Agreement (BAA) on the Enterprise plan. Lower plans do not include a BAA, so healthcare providers handling patient data should choose Enterprise.

Can I fax from email with Fax.Plus?

Yes. Email to Fax is included from the Basic plan. You send an email with the document attached to a fax address and Fax.Plus delivers it as a fax; received faxes can arrive in your inbox too.

Can I keep my existing fax number?

Yes. Fax Number Porting is included from the Premium plan. Basic includes one new fax number but not porting.

What is Fax.Plus MCP?

Fax.Plus MCP is a hosted MCP server that lets AI assistants such as Claude and ChatGPT send faxes, read received faxes, check delivery status and manage contacts and numbers. It is available on paid plans from Basic, but not on the Free plan or on accounts with Advanced Security Controls, which includes HIPAA and PHIPA accounts.
