What is GetResponse?

GetResponse is an email marketing and automation platform that has grown into an all-in-one marketing suite. Alongside newsletters and automated workflows, it includes landing pages, signup forms and popups, conversion funnels, a website builder, webinars, a course creator, web push notifications and a website chat tool. It is made by GetResponse S.A., a company based in Gdansk, Poland, and says it serves more than 350,000 businesses (a vendor figure).

The problem it solves is tool sprawl. A small business that would otherwise pay for an email tool, a landing page builder, a webinar platform and a course host can run all four in one account, with one contact list and one bill.

AI has become a bigger part of the product in 2026: an AI email and subject line generator, an AI creator for landing pages and websites, an assistant that suggests automation templates from a plain-language description, and the GetResponse MCP, which lets AI assistants such as Claude and ChatGPT draft work inside your account.

Who it is for

  • Small businesses that want newsletters, a welcome series and lead-capture pages without stitching several tools together.
  • Online stores on Shopify, WooCommerce, Magento or PrestaShop that need abandoned cart emails, product recommendations and promo codes (Marketer and up).
  • Coaches, trainers and course creators who sell through webinars and online courses (Creator plan).
  • Businesses with EU audiences that want an EU-based vendor and controls for open tracking consent.

Who should not use it: newsletter writers who only send broadcasts (a creator tool such as Kit or a budget sender such as Moosend is simpler or cheaper); B2B teams that need lead scoring tied to a sales CRM and deep attribution (consider ActiveCampaign); and anyone sending cold email to people who never opted in.

Key features

  • Email marketing. A visual email editor and HTML editor, predesigned templates, A/B testing, RSS-to-email, inbox preview, dark mode preview, a SPAM check and custom DKIM. Perfect timing sends at each contact’s likely best time, and Time travel delivers at the same local hour across time zones.
  • Marketing automation. Workflows built from scratch or templates, autoresponders and drip campaigns, birthday emails, contact tagging and scoring, abandoned cart and visited-URL triggers, and dynamic segmentation. Since October 2026 you can send a newsletter directly from a segment.
  • AI tools. The AI email generator and AI subject line generator (built with OpenAI technology, per GetResponse), an AI creator for landing pages and websites, an AI course creator, AI Insights reports (exportable to PDF), and an assistant that recommends automation templates. The GetResponse MCP connects Claude, ChatGPT and other MCP clients; it only creates drafts.
  • Landing pages, forms and funnels. Unlimited landing pages on paid plans, signup forms and popups, and ready-made lead, lead magnet, sales and webinar funnels (funnels on Marketer and up).
  • Ecommerce. Store and product sync, abandoned cart recovery, promo codes, product recommendation blocks, Price Drop campaigns and revenue tracking for Shopify, WooCommerce, Magento, PrestaShop and other platforms.
  • Webinars and courses. Live, on-demand and paid webinars with breakout rooms, and a course creator with PayPal and Stripe payments and 0% transaction fees from GetResponse (Creator plan).
  • Website builder, web push and Chats. Build up to 5 active websites on Creator, send browser push notifications, and add GetResponse Chats to your site (Marketer and up).

Pricing

At the time of writing GetResponse has a free plan, three self-serve paid plans priced by list size and a quoted Enterprise plan. Prices are in US dollars, net of tax, and were verified on getresponse.com/pricing on 2026-10-12. Every paid plan includes unlimited monthly email sends.

Points to keep in mind:

  • Annual billing saves 18% and is paid in full upfront. Yearly plans include a free custom domain.
  • List sizes are fixed steps (1k, 2.5k, 5k, 10k, 25k, 50k, 100k). At 2,501 contacts you pay the 5,000 price.
  • Nonprofits get 50% off monthly plans, according to the pricing page.
  • Upgrades apply immediately and restart the billing cycle; downgrades and annual-to-monthly switches need a support ticket or live chat.
  • The free trial gives 14 days of premium features; after that the account drops to the free plan unless you upgrade.

How to use GetResponse: step-by-step

1. Create your account and import contacts

  1. Sign up at getresponse.com. You get the 14-day premium trial, then the free plan unless you pay.
  2. Add your sender address on a domain you own and set up custom DKIM so mail is authenticated. Free webmail addresses hurt deliverability.
  3. Import contacts from a CSV file or connect your store (Shopify, WooCommerce, Magento or another integration). Only import people who opted in, and add tags by source so you can segment later.

2. Capture new subscribers

  1. Create a signup form or popup and connect it to your list, or build a landing page. The AI creator can generate a first draft of a page from a short description.
  2. For a lead magnet, use a lead magnet funnel (Marketer and up), which gives you a ready-made path from signup page to follow-up emails instead of building each piece separately.
  3. If you rely heavily on landing page testing, note that the free plan has no A/B tests on landing pages. A specialist builder such as Unbounce or Leadpages offers more control.

3. Build a welcome workflow

  1. Open automation and pick a welcome template, or describe what you want in plain language and let the AI assistant suggest a template.
  2. Set the trigger to a contact subscribing to your list or form, then add emails with waits between them. On Starter this welcome series plus one custom workflow is your full allowance.
  3. On Marketer, add an abandoned cart workflow for your store and a tag-based branch for buyers versus non-buyers.
  4. Publish the workflow and run a test contact through it.

4. Send your first newsletter

  1. Create a newsletter and choose a template. Use the AI email generator for a draft from your topic and goal, or draft it with Claude or ChatGPT through the GetResponse MCP; either way, edit before sending.
  2. Pick recipients by list or segment, and use Perfect timing or Time travel if your audience spans time zones.
  3. Run the SPAM check, look at the inbox preview and dark mode preview, and send yourself a test.
  4. Set up an A/B test on the subject line for larger lists, then schedule. Check opens, clicks and revenue in the reports afterwards.

Tips to get better results

  • Choose the plan by features, not price. If you need abandoned cart emails or more than one custom workflow, Starter will frustrate you within weeks; start on Marketer.
  • Use the trial to test premium features. Build the workflows you need in the 14 days so you know which plan they require before the account drops to free.
  • Clean the list before you cross a step. Removing inactive contacts can keep you on the 2,500 or 10,000 tier.
  • Rely on clicks as well as opens for EU audiences. GetResponse added per-message open-tracking switches and open-tracking consent collection after French and Italian regulator guidance, so open rates may be partial.
  • Keep AI drafts on a short leash. Give the generator a specific goal, offer and audience. Our guide on how to write better prompts helps, and our Claude review covers one of the assistants the MCP supports.
  • Use segments for sends. Newsletters can now be sent straight from a segment, and workflows can start from one, which beats maintaining many separate lists.

Limitations and common problems

  • Starter is thin. One custom workflow and three AI generator uses make it a trial-sized plan for anyone serious about automation.
  • Free plan limits bite early. 2,500 messages a month across all message types, a badge on every email and a lifetime 1,000-visitor cap for landing pages (pages go offline once reached). Free accounts unused for 90 days are disabled.
  • Conflicting free plan figures. The vendor’s free plan page mentions both 500 contacts and 1,000 contacts during the first 14 days; plan around 500.
  • Plan changes via support. You cannot downgrade yourself in the app; open a ticket or use live chat.
  • Course creator limits are unclear. GetResponse’s pricing page lists different student limits for Creator in different places, so confirm with support if you plan a large course.
  • AI data handling is only partly documented. The AI generator uses OpenAI technology, but the pages we read do not say whether your email content or contacts are used to train models.

Alternatives

  • Moosend - cheaper email marketing and automation with unlimited sends on Pro, but no permanent free plan.
  • Campaign Monitor - design-led email with unlimited users and agency sub-accounts, at higher prices.
  • ActiveCampaign - deeper automation, CRM and predictive sending for businesses focused on email-driven sales.
  • Kit - creator-focused email with a free plan for up to 10,000 subscribers and built-in digital product sales.

Verdict

Sign up for GetResponse if you want email automation, landing pages and, on Creator, webinars and courses in one account, and you can justify Marketer or Creator pricing. Use the 14-day trial to build your real workflows before choosing a plan, and take the annual discount once you are settled. Skip it if you only need a simple newsletter (the free plan’s limits and Starter’s thin automation make cheaper tools better value), or if you need a B2B CRM with lead scoring at the centre of your marketing.
