Claude is Anthropic’s AI assistant, and for a growing number of writers, analysts and developers it has quietly become the tool they open first. We used it as our main assistant for a month across editing, research, document review and coding to find out why, and where it still falls behind.

What Claude does

Claude is a conversational assistant available on the web, desktop and mobile. It reads and writes text, analyses uploaded documents and images, searches the web, writes and runs code, remembers context across chats, and produces standalone outputs called Artifacts (documents, code files, small apps) that you can edit and reuse. Since September 2026 it can also create designs, slide decks and documents directly in a chat. Projects let you give it persistent instructions and reference files. For developers, Claude Code is an agent that works directly in your repository, from the terminal, your IDE, the desktop app or the web.

The current model line-up is Opus 5.5 (released 22 September 2026), Sonnet 5.5 (28 September) and Haiku 5.5 (7 October; see our Claude Haiku 5.5 news story), with the Fable models at the top end for paid plans.

Pro is priced like ChatGPT Plus. The difference is in the limits: there is no fixed message count, but paid plans have a session limit that resets every five hours and a weekly limit across all models, and Claude Code draws from the same allowance. A long afternoon of heavy document work can hit the ceiling. You can now switch on pay-as-you-go usage credits instead of waiting, and the Max tiers exist for people who hit the wall every day.

Writing: the main event

This is where Claude earns its reputation. Its default prose reads more like a careful human editor than a template: varied sentence length, fewer bullet-point reflexes, and a willingness to commit to a point of view rather than hedge everything. When we asked for a rewrite of a 1,500-word article “in the author’s voice, tighter, no new claims”, it preserved the voice and cut the fluff without inventing facts.

It also takes editorial instructions seriously. Tell it “no em-dashes, no lists, short paragraphs” and it complies for the rest of the conversation, which is not something every assistant manages. For prompt techniques that get the most out of this, see our prompting guide.

Long documents and analysis

Claude’s large context window is not a spec-sheet curiosity; it changes how you work. We uploaded a 180-page PDF and asked questions that required pulling details from different chapters, and the answers were accurate and quoted the right sections. The same holds for meeting transcripts, legal agreements and support ticket exports. It is also careful to say when something is not in the document rather than guessing.

Coding and Claude Code

In the chat app, Claude is an excellent pair programmer: clear explanations, correct fixes, and good judgment about when a refactor is worth doing. Artifacts let you preview small web apps and components instantly.

Claude Code is the bigger story for developers. It runs in your terminal, IDE, desktop app or browser, reads your repository, makes multi-file changes, runs tests and commits, and it does this with enough judgment that you can hand it a medium-sized task and review the diff afterwards. It is included on every paid plan but not Free. We cover it alongside other options in our guide to AI coding assistants.

Projects and Artifacts

Projects are simple and effective: a set of instructions plus reference files that apply to every chat inside the project. We keep one per client with style guides and background documents, which removes the need to re-explain context. Artifacts turn outputs into editable objects rather than text buried in a chat, which makes iterating on a document or a snippet much faster.

With web search, Claude answers current questions with cited sources and is good at synthesising several pages into a coherent summary. It is not as deliberately built around citations as a dedicated answer engine, but it is more than good enough for most research, and its summaries are easier to read than most.

What is missing

  • Image generation. Claude can read images but not create them; Anthropic’s own help centre says it “doesn’t generate photos or illustrations”. It can build diagrams and charts in HTML or SVG, but if you need illustrations or mockups, you will keep another tool around.
  • Voice. Voice mode is available on every plan across mobile, desktop and web, but it is still labelled beta and is not as central to the experience as it is in ChatGPT.
  • Ecosystem. There is no equivalent of the custom GPT store. Integrations are growing, especially through connectors, but ChatGPT still has more.

Privacy

This changed in 2025, and older reviews still get it wrong. Under Anthropic’s updated consumer terms, Free, Pro and Max users choose whether their chats and coding sessions are used to train models, via the Model Improvement setting in Privacy Settings. If you opt in, data from new or resumed chats can be kept for up to five years; if you do not, the standard retention is 30 days. Team, Enterprise, Education and API usage are outside this policy and excluded from training. Check the setting once, and read the current terms for regulated work.

Who should use Claude

  • Writers, editors and marketers who care about prose quality and voice.
  • Analysts, lawyers and researchers who work with long documents.
  • Developers who want a strong coding assistant and an agentic tool in the terminal.

Who should look elsewhere

  • Anyone who needs image generation or a voice-first assistant should consider ChatGPT. Our ChatGPT vs Claude comparison breaks down the trade-offs.
  • People who live in Gmail, Docs and Drive may find Gemini more convenient, and it also generates images and video.
  • Very heavy users on a budget may find Pro limits restrictive and should budget for a higher tier.

Verdict

Claude scores 4.5 out of 5. It is the best mainstream assistant for writing and document work, and a top-tier choice for coding. The limits on Pro and the lack of image generation are the only things keeping it from a higher score. If words are your job, start here.

Frequently asked questions

Is Claude better than ChatGPT?

For writing quality and long-document analysis, we think so. ChatGPT wins on breadth: voice, image generation and integrations. Most people will be happy with either; pick based on what you do most.

Does Claude have a free plan?

Yes. The free tier includes the Sonnet and Haiku models, web search, file creation, memory and Artifacts, with usage limits. Pro ($20/month at the time of writing) adds Opus, Projects, Claude Code and much more usage.

Can Claude browse the web?

Yes, web search is available on every plan, including Free, so Claude can answer questions about current events and cite sources.

Does Claude train on my conversations?

On Free, Pro and Max it is your choice. The Model Improvement setting in Privacy Settings controls it: opted in, chats can be kept for up to five years for training; opted out, the standard retention is 30 days. Team, Enterprise and API data is excluded.

How do Claude's usage limits work?

There is no fixed message count. Paid plans have a session limit that resets every five hours and a weekly limit across all models, shared between Claude and Claude Code. You can see both in Settings > Usage and turn on pay-as-you-go usage credits if you hit them.
