What is Moosend?

Moosend is an email marketing and automation platform for small and mid-sized businesses. You build newsletters in a drag-and-drop editor, segment and personalise them, and set up automated workflows that react to what subscribers do, such as signing up, viewing a product or abandoning a cart. Landing pages and subscription forms are built in, so you can collect subscribers without a separate tool.

Moosend was owned by Sitecore until June 2025, when Constant Contact announced it had acquired it (Moosend still powers Sitecore Send). The product continues under the Moosend name at moosend.com.

The problem it solves is simple: getting automation-grade email marketing at a price a small business can justify. Its Pro plan starts at $9 a month and already includes unlimited sends, automation workflows, landing pages and A/B testing.

Who it is for

  • Small businesses and solo founders who want newsletters plus a welcome series or re-engagement flow, without paying ActiveCampaign or HubSpot prices.
  • Online stores that want automations triggered by product views, carts and purchases, plus product recommendations in emails.
  • Nonprofits, which get an extra 25% discount that stacks with annual billing.
  • Occasional senders, such as an association that mails a few times a year, who may prefer pay-as-you-go email credits to a monthly plan.

Who should not use it: teams larger than five people who do not want to negotiate a Moosend+ or Enterprise contract; businesses that need transactional email or SSO as standard; creators who want built-in paid newsletters or digital product sales (look at Kit); and anyone planning cold outreach to people who never opted in.

Key features

  • Newsletter editor and templates. A drag-and-drop editor with templates, support for custom-coded templates and Conditional Visibility Content, which shows or hides blocks depending on who is reading.
  • Segmentation, personalisation and A/B testing. Segment by subscriber data and behaviour, personalise content, and split-test campaigns. Spam Analysis & Testing checks a campaign before it goes out.
  • Automation Workflow Builder. A visual builder for triggers, conditions and actions, with pre-built automation templates Moosend calls Recipes (for example welcome and cart-abandonment flows) so you do not start from a blank canvas.
  • User behaviour tracking. A tracking script records page browsing, product views, carts, purchases and custom events, which you can use as automation triggers and segment conditions.
  • Landing pages and subscription forms. Builders for both, each with its own analytics, so you can capture signups without another tool.
  • Reporting. Real-time campaign reports, email heatmaps showing where people click, and Google Analytics tracking for traffic and conversions from email.
  • Moosend AI. The AI Writer suggests copy in the editor. AI-Engine Product Recommendations add personalised products to ecommerce emails, and Audience Discovery is a paid add-on. Free standalone tools include a Subject Line Tester and a DMARC Checker.
  • Integrations and API. 80+ integrations and API access; an SMTP server and Transactional API exist for transactional mail, sold as an add-on below Enterprise.

Pricing

At the time of writing Moosend has a 30-day free trial, a self-serve Pro plan priced by contact count, and two quoted plans. Prices are in US dollars per month before tax and were verified on moosend.com/pricing on 2026-10-12.

Points to keep in mind:

  • Tiers are fixed. There is no 2,500-contact tier, so 2,001 contacts bills at the 3,000 tier ($32 monthly). The jump from 8,000 ($64) to 10,000 contacts ($88) is steep. Above 1,000,000 contacts you contact sales.
  • Contacts are counted once per unique email address. A banner warns you when you exceed your plan, and downgrades take effect at the end of the billing cycle. You can pay by card or PayPal.
  • Pay-as-you-go credits are an alternative to Pro: 350,000 emails for $350 up to 1,000,000 for $1,000. One credit is one email to one recipient, and credits never expire.
  • Nonprofits get an extra 25% off, which stacks with the annual discount.

How to use Moosend: step-by-step

1. Start the trial and prepare your account

  1. Sign up for the free trial at moosend.com. No credit card is needed, and you get 30 days with up to 1,000 contacts and 2 team members.
  2. Add your sender details and authenticate your sending domain before you send anything real. Use a domain you own, not a free webmail address. Moosend’s free DMARC Checker is a quick way to see whether your domain already has a DMARC record.
  3. Create a mailing list and import your contacts from a CSV file or through one of the integrations. Only import people who opted in, and map columns to custom fields (first name, plan, city) so you can personalise later.

2. Build a signup form and landing page

  1. Open the subscription form builder and choose a form type and template. Edit the headline, fields and button, and connect it to your list.
  2. Publish the form on your site with the embed code. If you want a dedicated page for a lead magnet, use the landing page builder instead and share its link.
  3. Check the analytics for each form or page after a week. If one converts poorly and you want deeper A/B testing of pages, a dedicated builder such as Unbounce or Leadpages goes further than Moosend’s.

3. Set up a welcome automation

  1. Open the Automation Workflow Builder and browse the Recipes. Pick a welcome recipe rather than starting from scratch.
  2. Set the trigger to a subscriber joining your list (or a specific form), then add the emails and the wait steps between them. Three to four emails over the first week is a sensible start.
  3. For an online store, install the tracking script on your site and add a cart-abandonment recipe that triggers on carts without a purchase.
  4. Activate the workflow and send a test subscriber through it with your own address before you rely on it.

4. Send your first campaign

  1. Create a new campaign, choose a template and write in the drag-and-drop editor. Use the AI Writer (set the content type, tone and word limit) for a first draft or alternative phrasing, then edit it in your own voice.
  2. Add personalisation fields and, if you serve different audiences, Conditional Visibility Content blocks.
  3. Run Spam Analysis & Testing, check the subject in the Subject Line Tester, and send yourself a test.
  4. Choose an A/B test on the subject line for larger sends, then schedule. Review the real-time report and heatmap afterwards to see what people clicked.

Tips to get better results

  • Authenticate first. Domain authentication does more for inbox placement than any template or subject line.
  • Size your plan to the tier, not the exact count. If you are at 2,100 contacts, cleaning 101 inactive addresses drops you from the $32 tier to the $24 tier.
  • Prune before the 10,000 jump. The step from $64 to $88 monthly makes list hygiene worth it just below 10,000 contacts.
  • Use Recipes, then customise. The pre-built workflows cover the common flows; change timing and copy rather than designing logic from nothing.
  • Track behaviour on your site. Product-view and cart triggers are where Moosend’s automation earns its keep for stores.
  • Treat AI Writer output as a draft. It is useful for variations and subject lines. Our guide on how to write better prompts applies to any AI copy tool.
  • Pay annually once you are sure. Annual billing saves 20%, but use the trial and a few monthly cycles to confirm the tool fits first.

Limitations and common problems

  • No free plan. The 30-day trial is all you get for free. If you only need to mail a small list occasionally for free, GetResponse has a permanent free plan with tighter limits; otherwise consider Moosend’s pay-as-you-go credits.
  • Five-user cap. Pro allows 5 team members; extra seats mean a Moosend+ or Enterprise conversation.
  • Add-ons for advanced needs. Transactional email, dedicated IPs, SSO & SAML, hosted files and custom dashboards are add-ons below Enterprise, with prices only on request.
  • Uneven price tiers. Some tiers are poor value (10,000 contacts costs much more than 8,000). Watch your count and clean the list.
  • Product momentum is hard to read. The Moosend blog is active, with roughly weekly marketing articles (the newest at the time of writing is dated 20 October 2026), but none of the recent posts is a product announcement and there is no public product changelog or release notes, so it is hard to tell how fast the product is moving under Constant Contact. Weigh that if you need features that do not exist yet.
  • Help center availability. During our checks the help and developer documentation sites were intermittently unavailable. Use live chat on the trial if you get stuck.

Alternatives

  • GetResponse - an all-in-one platform with email, landing pages, webinars and a course creator, plus a permanent free plan; more expensive than Moosend at most list sizes.
  • Campaign Monitor - design-focused email with strong templates and agency features, at higher prices.
  • ActiveCampaign - deeper automation, CRM and predictive sending for businesses that have outgrown simpler tools.
  • Kit - email for creators, with a free plan and built-in sales of digital products and paid newsletters.
  • Sender - similarly cheap email and SMS marketing with a permanent free plan for up to 2,500 subscribers, but no AI writer in the editor.

Verdict

Sign up for Moosend if you are a small business or online store that wants unlimited sends, automation workflows, landing pages and forms at one of the lowest prices on the market, and five team members are enough. Use the 30-day trial to build a welcome workflow and send a real campaign, then switch to annual billing for the 20% saving. Skip it if you need a permanent free plan, transactional email or SSO without an enterprise contract, or a vendor with a visible, fast-moving product roadmap.

Frequently asked questions

Is Moosend free?

Not permanently. At the time of writing Moosend offers a 30-day free trial with no credit card, up to 2 team members and unlimited sends to up to 1,000 contacts. After that you upgrade to Pro or buy pay-as-you-go email credits. Some older articles still describe a free plan; the vendor pricing page no longer shows one.

How much does Moosend cost?

Pro starts at $9 a month for 500 contacts on monthly billing, $16 for 1,000, $48 for 5,000 and $88 for 10,000. Biannual billing saves 15% and annual billing saves 20%, so 500 contacts costs $7 a month on an annual plan. Moosend+ and Enterprise are quoted by sales.

Who owns Moosend?

Constant Contact announced in June 2025 that it had acquired Moosend from Sitecore. Moosend continues to run as its own product, and data-subject requests now go through Constant Contact's privacy portal.

Does Moosend have AI features?

Yes. The AI Writer suggests email copy inside the editor and is included in the trial and Pro. AI-Engine Product Recommendations suggest products to ecommerce subscribers, and Audience Discovery is a paid add-on. Moosend also offers a free Subject Line Tester and DMARC Checker.

Can I send transactional emails with Moosend?

Moosend has an SMTP server and a Transactional API, but transactional emails are listed as an add-on for Moosend+ and Enterprise rather than a standard Pro feature. Confirm with sales before you plan order confirmations or password resets around it.

Where does Moosend store data?

Moosend's Trust Center says customer contact data is hosted in the EU on Amazon Web Services, and it publishes a Data Processing Addendum and GDPR Addendum (June 2025 versions) in which Moosend acts as processor for your contacts' data.
