Anthropic is closing the standalone Claude Design site. claude.ai/design keeps working until December 14, 2026, then redirects to Claude, where Claude Design now lives. New designs, design systems and slide decks made in Claude are saved as artifacts. Design systems need a one-time migration, projects stay put for now, and chats and comments will be deleted. The source is Anthropic’s help article Migrate from standalone Claude Design to Claude. The article does not say why the standalone version is closing.

The date also appears in the Claude Code changelog: version 2.1.302 (October 16) adds a notice to /design-sync and /design-login that standalone Claude Design closes by December 14, 2026.

How to migrate design systems

One migration covers every design system in the organisation, including ones other people own, so it only needs to run once. Anyone who can use Claude Design can start it.

  1. Open the Artifacts page in Claude.
  2. Click the Migrate team design systems banner. If you closed it, use the Claude Design menu at the top right of the page.
  3. Confirm with Migrate (on individual plans it starts straight away) and wait for it to finish.
  4. Review the results.

Ownership carries over. If an owner has left, the Primary Owner takes over. Published, non-private design systems become visible to everyone in the organisation; on individual plans nothing is shared.

Running Migrate again picks up new or changed systems but skips ones you have already edited in Claude, so your changes are not overwritten.

What does not migrate, and how to fix it

Empty design systems and those built from a starter theme (even if edited) are skipped. Others land under Couldn’t be migrated with a reason: a file is too large, is a kind an artifact cannot hold, has a name an artifact cannot use, or cannot be opened. To fix one, choose Fix in Claude Design Standalone, run the check, shrink, rename, convert or remove the listed files, check again and migrate again. The help article notes that the uploads folder often holds duplicates worth trimming.

Projects do not migrate yet. To keep a copy, open the project in the standalone app, go to Share, choose Project HTML (for slide decks it sits under “More formats and apps”), keep Project archive selected and click Export. You get a .zip of all project files that does not count toward usage limits, one project at a time.

What Team and Enterprise admins need to do

  • Turn artifacts on. Without them, people cannot create designs in Claude or migrate.
  • Check design system settings. Design systems and Design/Slides templates are on by default for Team and off by default for Enterprise. Enterprise custom roles need the matching artifact permissions; a design system whose owner’s role lacks design system access will not migrate.
  • Set a default design system in Settings, which the article recommends to get the most out of artifacts.
  • Zero data retention organisations cannot turn on artifacts, so they cannot migrate. They should download projects before December 14.

What it means for Claude users

If you only make the odd deck in chat, nothing changes: that already happens in Claude. If your team keeps brand systems in Claude Design, run the migration early so there is time to fix failures, and export any project you cannot afford to lose. Our Claude review covers where design and slides fit in the plans, and Claude vs Gemini compares the two assistants overall. If you mostly need presentations, Gamma is a dedicated deck tool. More updates are in the News section.

If you are still choosing between assistants, our ChatGPT vs Claude comparison covers where Claude’s design and document tools stand against ChatGPT.

Frequently asked questions

When does standalone Claude Design close?

On December 14, 2026. Until then claude.ai/design keeps working. After that date the URL takes you to Claude, where Claude Design now lives and new designs, design systems and slide decks are created as artifacts.

Do my Claude Design projects move to Claude automatically?

No, not yet. Projects stay in the standalone version and work until it closes; Anthropic says more details on moving projects are coming. You can download a project now from Share > Project HTML with "Project archive" selected, which gives a free .zip of its files, one project at a time.

What is lost when standalone Claude Design closes?

Chats with Claude and comments on projects and design systems are not carried over and are deleted after the standalone version closes. Public links to standalone projects stop working. Save anything you need before December 14.

Why did my design system fail to migrate?

Empty design systems and ones built from a starter theme are not migrated. Others fail because a file is too large, is a kind an artifact cannot hold, has an unusable name or cannot be opened, or because of team settings such as design systems being turned off. The help article lists the reason under "Couldn't be migrated".

Which Claude plans include Claude Design?

Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise, according to Anthropic's help article. On Team and Enterprise, artifacts must be turned on for the organisation, and on Enterprise design systems are off by default.
