ChatGPT is the better all-round AI assistant in October 2026: its answers are more polished, its agents do more, and it connects to more third-party apps. Gemini is the better buy if your work runs on Gmail, Docs and Drive, or if you want cloud storage and video generation in the same subscription. Both are free to start and cost about $20 a month for the main paid tier at the time of writing.
We have reviewed both (ChatGPT review, 4.5/5; Gemini review, 4.0/5). Here we match the plans price point by price point and name a winner for each kind of work. If Claude is also on your shortlist, our ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini hub picks one of the three for each job.

At $20 a month you are buying different things. ChatGPT Plus buys the stronger GPT-6 Sol model, no ads, projects, scheduled tasks, more deep research, connectors and the full Codex coding agent. Google AI Pro buys a 1M-token context window, Gemini inside Gmail and Docs, Chrome auto browse, YouTube Premium Lite and 5 TB of storage. If you already pay Google for storage, AI Pro costs little extra.
Limits work differently. Google publishes its scheme: compute-based limits that refresh every five hours up to a weekly cap, with paid users dropped to Flash-Lite when they run out. It also publishes context per tier (32K, 128K, 1M). OpenAI does not publish chat caps or a context window per ChatGPT plan; it only gives estimated message ranges for its agentic Work mode and Codex, which vary widely with the task. We do not quote a ChatGPT context figure because OpenAI does not.
Models in October 2026: GPT-6 Sol and Luna vs Gemini 3.1 Pro and 3.8 Flash
OpenAI began rolling out GPT-6 to everyone in ChatGPT on 7 October 2026, replacing the GPT-5.6 versions (OpenAI deployment safety note). Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise get GPT-6 Sol; Free and Go get the lighter GPT-6 Luna. Pro, Business and Enterprise also get GPT-6 Pro, a slower mode powered by GPT-6 Astra. Correction, 15 October 2026: GPT-5.5 retired on 14 October from Codex for users signed in with ChatGPT, replaced by GPT-6.1 Sol on paid plans and GPT-6 Luna on Free and Go; OpenAI’s documentation now scopes the retirement to Codex, and the API is unaffected (OpenAI models page). Our Q4 2026 model retirements roundup has the full calendar.
Gemini Free runs Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite. AI Plus adds 3.6 Flash and 3.1 Pro, and AI Pro and Ultra pair 3.1 Pro with Gemini 3.8 Flash, released in September. Deep Think, Google’s slowest reasoning mode, is AI Ultra only. Update, 14 October 2026: Gemini 4 Argon, announced on 30 September, became generally available on 13 October. It is rolling out in the Gemini app to AI Pro and Ultra subscribers (not Free or Plus) and is on the paid tier of the Gemini API. GitHub Copilot also added it for Pro+, Max, Business and Enterprise users. See our Gemini 4 Argon news post for prices and limits.
Both vendors publish benchmarks that favour their own models; our guide to reading model announcements explains why we do not pick a winner on them.
Everyday answers and writing
ChatGPT gives the more natural, better-organised answer to an everyday question, and since GPT-6 it can answer with “Intelligent UI”: an interactive chart, a set of buttons or a short form instead of a wall of text. Gemini’s answers are accurate but lean heavily on bullet points and headings, and it takes more steering to get prose you would send to a client.
Neither is the best writer available. If writing quality matters most, read ChatGPT vs Claude and Claude vs Gemini. A clear brief helps either one; our prompt-writing guide covers what works.
Research: deep research, search and sources
Both search the web and cite sources on every plan. Gemini’s advantage is reach: Deep Research is on every tier, including Free, and it can use your Gmail, Drive and Google Chat as sources, which is useful for internal research. It uses more of your allowance and may be unavailable to free users at peak times.
ChatGPT’s deep research is limited on Free and Go and expanded on Plus and Pro. On paid plans the two are close; on Free, Gemini is the better research assistant. Either way, check the key sources yourself. For citation-first research, see Perplexity vs ChatGPT for research.
Agents and automation: ChatGPT Work and dots vs Chrome auto browse and Gemini Spark
ChatGPT has the more developed agent story. Its Work mode runs tasks in a cloud browser on paid plans other than Free and Go, and on Plus and Pro it can sign in to websites for you from the web and mobile apps (OpenAI browser docs). Work shares its usage allowance with Codex. Plus adds scheduled tasks, and the new “dots”, always-on assistants that work in the background, are rolling out gradually to Pro, Business Premium and Enterprise accounts (on Pro, adults outside the EEA, UK and Switzerland). Conversations with a dot do not count toward ChatGPT limits (OpenAI dots docs).
Gemini’s agents live in Chrome. AI Pro includes auto browse, where Gemini carries out tasks on web pages in your browser; Ultra gets the highest auto browse access plus Gemini Spark, Google’s agent, in select countries. Gemini also has skills, saved reusable instructions you call with ”/”, which replace Gems: personal Gems switch to skills automatically from November 2026. ChatGPT has equivalents in custom GPTs, projects and its own skills.
For delegating multi-step work, ChatGPT is ahead.
Google Workspace vs the ChatGPT ecosystem
This section decides the matter for many teams. Gemini works inside Google’s apps: Gmail and Vids from AI Plus, Docs from AI Pro, plus Chrome and connected apps. It drafts replies and summarises documents where you already are.
ChatGPT goes wide instead. Connectors on Plus and above link it to Gmail, Google Calendar, Notion, SharePoint and more, so it can search your files from its own app, and custom GPTs give you a ready-made assistant for most niches. The desktop app combines chat, Work and Codex. Going the other way, Notion Business users can connect a ChatGPT plan to Notion Agent instead of spending Notion credits.
If your company runs on Google Workspace, Gemini is already where you work. If you use Microsoft 365 or a mix of tools, ChatGPT fits better.
Images, video and voice
Gemini wins on media. It generates and edits images with Google’s Nano Banana models on every plan, generates video on paid plans (Veo 3.1 on Ultra), includes Flow credits for filmmaking from AI Plus, and makes music with Lyria 3.5. Gemini Live lets you talk while sharing your camera or screen.
ChatGPT’s image generation is excellent for mockups, diagrams and images with text in them, but Free has tight, unpublished caps. Its voice mode is natural and handles interruptions well. It does not generate video: OpenAI shut down the standalone Sora app on 26 April 2026. If you need video, pick Gemini.
Coding
Codex, OpenAI’s coding agent, is part of ChatGPT on every plan: limited on Free and Go, with the full desktop app, CLI and IDE extensions from Plus. It shares usage with Work. Google’s tools sit outside the chat app: Jules (higher limits on AI Pro), Antigravity (entry limits on AI Pro) and the Gemini CLI. For most developers ChatGPT is the more convenient single subscription, though Claude Code is the agent to beat; see our AI coding assistants guide.
Privacy and data use
Both can train on consumer chats, but the controls differ in an important way:
| ChatGPT (Free, Go, Plus, Pro) | Gemini (personal accounts) | |
|---|---|---|
| Training switch | “Improve the model for everyone” in Data controls | Tied to Keep Activity |
| Opt out and keep history? | Yes | No: turning Keep Activity off stops saving history |
| Temporary chats | Not in history or used for training; kept up to 30 days | Not used for training; kept 72 hours |
| Business plans | Business and Enterprise not used for training by default | Workspace business chats not human-reviewed or used for training |
Sources: OpenAI data controls FAQ, Gemini Apps Privacy Hub.
In ChatGPT, go to Settings, Data controls and switch off “Improve the model for everyone”; your history stays. In Gemini, turning off Keep Activity stops future chats being used for training, but they are then kept for only 72 hours. A sample of chats is reviewed by humans, and reviewed chats are kept for up to three years even if you delete your activity. With Keep Activity on, activity auto-deletes after 18 months unless you change it to 3 or 36 months. For sensitive work, use a business plan on either side.
Switching between them
Gemini can import your ChatGPT history. Export your data from ChatGPT (Settings, Data controls), then in Gemini open Settings & help, choose “Import memory to Gemini” and upload the ZIP: up to 5 GB per file and five files a day (Google help page). It needs a personal Google Account and age 18 or over, and is not available in the EEA, Switzerland or the UK. The catch: imported chats go into Gemini Activity and may be used to train Google’s models. Remove anything sensitive first.
Which should you choose?
- Google Workspace teams: Gemini. Working inside Gmail and Docs saves more time than any model difference.
- Microsoft 365 or mixed stacks: ChatGPT, for its connectors and broader ecosystem.
- Budget users ($5-8): Gemini AI Plus at $4.99, with 400 GB of storage and video generation, beats ChatGPT Go at $8.
- Creators who need video or music: Gemini; ChatGPT does neither.
- Researchers: Gemini on a free plan; either on a paid plan.
- Developers: ChatGPT, for Codex in the same subscription.
- Heavy power users ($100+): ChatGPT Pro for agents and dots; AI Ultra if you want Deep Think, Veo 3.1 and 20-30 TB of storage.

Frequently asked questions
Is Gemini better than ChatGPT?
Not overall. ChatGPT has the broader, more polished feature set and the more capable agents. Gemini wins on Google Workspace integration, bundled storage, video generation and the cheapest paid tier, so it is the better pick if your work lives in Gmail, Docs and Drive.
Which is cheaper, ChatGPT Plus or Google AI Pro?
They cost almost the same at the time of writing: ChatGPT Plus is $20 a month and Google AI Pro is $19.99. AI Pro also includes 5 TB of Google storage. Below that, ChatGPT Go costs $8 a month and Google AI Plus $4.99, and Go may show ads.
Can ChatGPT make videos like Gemini?
No. ChatGPT does not generate video at the time of writing; OpenAI shut down the standalone Sora app in April 2026. Gemini generates video on its paid plans, with Veo 3.1 on AI Ultra.
Is ChatGPT or Gemini better for Gmail and Google Docs?
Gemini. It works inside Gmail from Google AI Plus and inside Docs from Google AI Pro, and Deep Research can use your Gmail and Drive as sources. ChatGPT can connect to Gmail and Google Calendar on paid plans, but it works from its own app rather than inside Google's.
Can I move my ChatGPT chats to Gemini?
Yes, on a personal Google Account if you are 18 or older and outside the EEA, Switzerland and the UK. Export your data from ChatGPT, then upload the ZIP in Gemini under Import memory to Gemini. Imported chats are saved to Gemini Activity and may be used to train Google's models.
