ChatGPT is the best all-round AI assistant for most people. Claude is the best for writing, long documents and code. Gemini is the best value if you live in Google Workspace or want images, video and storage in the same plan. All three cost $20 a month at the level most people need (Gemini $19.99), at the time of writing.
This page is the short version. We have reviewed each one in depth (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini) and compared them in pairs; below we line up all three by job and by price, and link to the full argument for each pick.

None of the three publishes a fixed message count. Claude and Gemini both meter usage in five-hour windows up to a weekly cap; OpenAI does not publish chat caps for ChatGPT. Gemini is the only one that bundles storage, which makes Google AI Pro close to free if you already pay Google for 2 TB.
For companies that buy AI through a cloud contract, the vendor lines are blurring. Google Cloud now offers Claude models, and on 21 October it began a private preview of OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Luna for select enterprise customers, billed on the Google Cloud invoice (Google Cloud announcement). A day later Anthropic made an Anthropic-managed version of the full Claude API generally available on Google Cloud, alongside the Google-managed one (what changed and which to pick). That changes where you pay, not which chat app is better, so it does not move our picks.
Models in October 2026
ChatGPT. Chat moved to GPT-6 on 7 October 2026: GPT-6 Sol on Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise, and GPT-6 Luna on Free and Go from the following day. On 14 October, GPT-5.5 retired from Codex for users signed in with ChatGPT, replaced by GPT-6.1 Sol on paid plans and GPT-6 Luna on Free and Go; the API is unaffected. Our Q4 2026 model retirements calendar tracks the rest.
Claude. The current line-up is Opus 5.5 (22 September), Sonnet 5.5 (28 September) and Haiku 5.5 (7 October). Free gets Sonnet and Haiku; Opus needs Pro or higher. On 21 October Anthropic opened a waitlist for Claude Duet, a separate proactive-agent app built around Opus 5.5, included in Pro and Max for US users during the research preview and drawing on the same usage limits (Anthropic). On 20 October Google added Opus 5.5 and Sonnet 5.5 to its Antigravity coding agent for Google Cloud customers (Google Cloud).
Gemini. Gemini 4 Argon became generally available on 13 October and is rolling out in the app to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers. Free runs a Flash-Lite model and AI Plus gets Gemini 3.6 Flash; Pro and Ultra add Gemini 3.1 Pro. Deep Think is AI Ultra only, and Google’s help page now says it “is being replaced by Gemini 4 Argon”, without a date (Deep Think help).
All three vendors publish benchmarks that favour their own models, so we do not rank on them.
Free plans compared
| ChatGPT Free | Claude Free | Gemini Free | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Model | GPT-6 Luna | Sonnet and Haiku | Flash-Lite |
| Web search | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Deep research | Limited | No | Yes |
| Image generation | Yes, tight unpublished caps | No | Yes |
| Long documents | Context not published | Up to 1M tokens | 32K tokens |
| Extras | Projects, voice | Up to 5 Projects, Artifacts, voice (beta) | Gemini Live, Canvas, 15 GB storage |
The best free plan depends on the job. Gemini Free is the most generous overall, with Deep Research and image generation included. Claude Free is the one to use for long PDFs and contracts, because Gemini Free stops at about 50 pages of text. ChatGPT Free is a solid everyday assistant, but you may see ads, and research and images are capped. Claude Free has no Research mode or Claude Code.
Privacy defaults in one table
| Training on consumer chats | Retention | Business plans | |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Switch off “Improve the model for everyone” in Data controls; history stays | Temporary Chats kept up to 30 days, not used for training | Business and Enterprise not used for training by default |
| Claude | Your choice via the Model Improvement setting | Up to 5 years if you opt in, 30 days if not | Team and Enterprise excluded from training |
| Gemini | Tied to Keep Activity, which is on by default; a sample of chats is human-reviewed | Auto-delete after 18 months by default; reviewed chats kept up to 3 years; 72 hours with Keep Activity off | Workspace chats not human-reviewed or used for training |
ChatGPT is the only one where you can opt out of training and keep your history. Details are in each review’s privacy section (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini). For sensitive work, use a business plan.
Should you pay for more than one?
Most people should not. One $20 plan covers writing, research and everyday questions, and two cost $40 a month at the time of writing. As our ChatGPT vs Claude verdict puts it, the wrong choice is paying for both without a reason.
The pattern that works is one paid assistant plus a free one. If you use Google, add free Gemini for Gmail-adjacent tasks, Deep Research and images. If you research a lot, a free answer engine such as Perplexity covers quick cited searches (our Perplexity review explains when Pro is worth adding). Pay for a second subscription only when you hit a real gap every week, for example a developer on Claude Pro who also needs video, or a ChatGPT user whose job turns into long-document review.
A clear prompt matters more than the logo on the app; our prompt-writing guide works on all three.
Verdict: which should you choose?
- Pick ChatGPT if you want one assistant that does almost everything well: answers, agents, data analysis, voice and images. It is the safest default.
- Pick Claude if your work is mostly words or code: writing, editing, long documents and agentic coding with Claude Code.
- Pick Gemini if your work runs on Gmail, Docs and Drive, you need images or video, or you want storage bundled at $4.99 or $19.99.
Still torn? Use the free tiers on your real work for a week and pay for the one you keep opening. More matchups are in our AI tool comparisons, and every verdict is in our reviews.
Frequently asked questions
Which is better: ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini?
None wins everything. ChatGPT is the best all-rounder, with the broadest feature set. Claude is the best for writing, editing, long documents and agentic coding. Gemini is the best value for Google Workspace users and the only one of the three that generates video. Pick by the work you do most.
Which AI is best for coding: ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini?
Claude, narrowly ahead of ChatGPT. Claude Pro includes Claude Code, which needed the least supervision in our testing; ChatGPT includes the Codex agent on every plan and is close behind. Gemini's coding tools (Jules, Antigravity and the Gemini CLI) are capable but sit outside the chat app. Since 20 October, Google Cloud customers can also pick Claude Opus 5.5 and Sonnet 5.5 inside Antigravity.
Which has the best free plan?
It depends on the job. Gemini Free is the most generous overall, with Deep Research, image generation and 15 GB of storage. Claude Free is best for long documents, since it lists a context window of up to 1M tokens. ChatGPT Free runs GPT-6 Luna and is good for everyday questions, but it may show ads.
Which AI is best for writing?
Claude. Its drafts need less editing and it holds a voice and style instructions better than ChatGPT or Gemini, which is why we rate it 4.5/5 and name it the winner for writing in both of our pairwise comparisons.
Is Gemini better than ChatGPT if I use Google Workspace?
Yes, for most Workspace users. Gemini works inside Gmail from Google AI Plus and inside Docs from Google AI Pro, and Deep Research can use your Gmail and Drive as sources. ChatGPT is still the better general assistant, so Microsoft 365 and mixed-tool teams should lean ChatGPT.
