ChatGPT and Claude are the two assistants most people end up choosing between, and at $20 a month each, most people only want to pay for one. We have reviewed both in depth (ChatGPT review, Claude review). This comparison puts them head to head on the tasks that actually fill a working day and names a winner for each.
The short version
| Use case | Winner | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Writing and editing | Claude | More natural prose, better at holding a voice |
| Long documents | Claude | Handles very long files accurately, quotes the right sections |
| Research with sources | Tie | Both search and cite; ChatGPT’s deep research mode is more elaborate |
| Coding in chat | Tie | Both excellent; different strengths |
| Agentic coding | Claude | Claude Code is the more mature terminal agent |
| Data analysis | ChatGPT | Built-in Python sandbox with charts |
| Voice | ChatGPT | Voice is central to the product |
| Image generation | ChatGPT | Claude does not generate images |
| Integrations and ecosystem | ChatGPT | Custom GPTs, more connectors |
| Privacy controls | Tie | Both let consumer users opt out of training; business plans excluded |
| Free tier | ChatGPT | More features included for free |
Writing
Give both the same brief, a 600-word product update email with a specific tone, and the difference is immediate. ChatGPT produces a clean, well-structured draft that reads like a competent marketing template. Claude produces something closer to what a good writer on your team would send: more varied rhythm, fewer bullet points, more willingness to make a point rather than list options.
Both improve dramatically with a short style instruction, and ChatGPT’s custom instructions can close much of the gap. But if you do not want to fight your tool’s defaults, Claude wins.
Long documents and analysis
Upload a 150-page report and ask detailed cross-referencing questions and Claude is more consistently accurate, more willing to say “this is not in the document”, and better at quoting precisely. ChatGPT handles long files well too, but we saw more summarising where we wanted specifics. For contracts, transcripts, research papers and large exports, Claude is the safer tool.
Research
Both assistants search the web and cite sources. ChatGPT’s deep research mode produces long, structured reports from many sources and is the more elaborate feature. Claude’s search produces shorter, more readable syntheses. Neither should be trusted blindly for facts with numbers in them; both occasionally cite a page that does not say what the summary claims. For focused, citation-first research, see our Perplexity vs ChatGPT comparison.
Coding
In the chat window the two are close. ChatGPT is slightly better for quick data work thanks to its Python sandbox, which runs code and shows charts inline. Claude tends to give clearer explanations and shows better judgment on refactoring decisions.
The gap opens when you move to agentic work. Claude Code runs in your terminal, reads the repository, makes multi-file changes, runs tests and commits. OpenAI has equivalent tooling, and the editor-integrated market is crowded, but in our testing Claude Code handled medium-sized tasks with the least supervision. Our getting-started guide compares the options.
Voice, vision and images
This is where ChatGPT pulls ahead. Its voice mode is conversational, handles interruptions, and is useful on the move. Image generation is built in and good at text-in-image tasks such as mockups and diagrams. Claude reads images well but cannot create them, and voice is not central to its experience. If any of these matter to you, ChatGPT is the obvious choice.
Ecosystem and integrations
ChatGPT’s custom GPT store and larger set of connectors mean there is usually a ready-made assistant for whatever niche you are in. Claude’s Projects and connectors cover the common cases well, and its integration story is growing, but ChatGPT is still ahead on sheer volume.
Pricing and limits
Both charge $20 a month for the main paid tier. The practical difference is usage limits. Claude Pro’s limits are tighter for heavy users; Anthropic’s higher Max tiers exist for people who hit them. ChatGPT Plus has caps on its strongest models too, but we hit them less often in normal use. If you are a very heavy user, budget for a higher tier with either vendor.
Privacy
This has converged. Since Anthropic’s 2025 consumer terms update, Claude Free, Pro and Max users choose whether their chats are used for training via the Model Improvement setting; opting in extends retention to up to five years, otherwise it is 30 days. ChatGPT consumer plans train on chats unless you switch off “Improve the model for everyone” in Data controls, and Temporary Chats are excluded. Both exclude business-plan data from training. Check the setting on whichever you pick; once it is set, privacy is a wash.
Who should pick ChatGPT
- You want one app that writes, talks, sees and draws.
- You do quick data analysis from spreadsheets and CSVs.
- You rely on specific custom GPTs or integrations.
Who should pick Claude
- Your work is mostly writing, editing or reviewing documents.
- You regularly work with very long files.
- You want a terminal-based coding agent you can delegate real tasks to.
Verdict
There is no universal winner, and that is a good thing: it means picking the right tool is easy if you know what you do most. Claude is the better writer and document analyst. ChatGPT is the better everything-app. Try both free tiers on your real tasks for a week, then pay for the one you kept reaching for.
Frequently asked questions
Which is better for writing, ChatGPT or Claude?
Claude. Its default prose is more natural and it follows style instructions more consistently. ChatGPT is capable but needs more steering to avoid a formulaic tone.
Which is better for coding?
Both are strong in chat. For working inside a real codebase, Claude Code gives Claude an edge for terminal-based agentic work, while ChatGPT's Python sandbox is better for quick data analysis.
Can I use both for free?
Yes. Both have free tiers with daily limits. Trying each on your real tasks for a week is the best way to choose.
