Claude is the better choice if your work is mostly words or code: writing, editing, analysing long documents and programming. Gemini is the better choice if your work already runs on Google (Gmail, Docs, Drive, Chrome) or you need image and video generation. Both are free to start, and the main paid tier costs about $20 a month on either side at the time of writing, so the decision comes down to what you do all day, not price.
This comparison looks at what each consumer plan actually gets you, which is what most people end up buying. For the full picture of each product, see our Claude review and Gemini review.

At the $20 level, the two are close on price and different on value. Claude Pro buys a focused work tool with Claude Code and Opus access. Google AI Pro buys an AI assistant plus 5 TB of storage and Google extras, which is hard to beat if you were going to pay for Google One storage anyway. Google AI Plus at $4.99 is the cheapest paid tier in the category and has no Claude equivalent.
Both now use compute-based limits that refresh every five hours up to a weekly cap. On Claude, chat and Claude Code share the same limits, so heavy coding eats into your chat allowance.
Models: Opus 5.5 and Sonnet 5.5 vs Gemini 3.1 Pro and 3.8 Flash
Anthropic released Opus 5.5 on September 22, Sonnet 5.5 on September 28 and Haiku 5.5 on October 7, 2026. Free users get Sonnet and Haiku; Opus needs Pro or higher. Max subscribers can also use Anthropic’s Fable model, at a cost of 50% of their weekly limits according to the pricing page.
Google’s app runs Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite on Free, and Gemini 3.1 Pro plus Flash models on paid plans, with Gemini 3.8 Flash on AI Pro. Deep Think, Google’s slower reasoning mode, is reserved for AI Ultra. Google announced Gemini 4 Argon on September 30, but it is going to trusted cyber defenders first, then paid API customers and AI Ultra. You cannot use it in the regular Gemini app today.
Both vendors publish benchmark scores that favour their own models. We do not pick a winner on those numbers; our guide to reading AI model announcements explains why. In daily use, the differences below matter more than a few points on a leaderboard.
Writing and long documents
This is Claude’s home ground. Its drafts need less editing, it follows style instructions closely, and it is better at keeping a long piece consistent in tone. That matches what we found in the Claude review, and it is the main reason we rate Claude 4.5 against Gemini’s 4.0.
The context window is the practical difference for long files. Claude lists up to 1M tokens on every plan, including Free, so you can drop in a long contract or report without paying. Gemini Free stops at 32K tokens, roughly 50 pages of text, and AI Plus at 128K. If you analyse long PDFs on a budget, that gap matters more than any model upgrade.
Gemini writes competent, accurate prose, and inside Google Docs it is convenient for summarising and rewriting. For anything you will publish or send to a client, Claude produces a better first draft. Either way, a clear brief helps; our guide to writing better prompts covers the techniques that work on both.
Coding
Claude Pro includes Claude Code, Anthropic’s coding agent, which runs in the terminal, in IDEs, in the desktop app and on the web. It reads your codebase, edits files and runs commands, and it is the main reason many developers pay for Claude. Remember that it draws on the same usage limits as chat.
Google’s equivalents are Jules (an asynchronous coding agent, with higher limits on AI Pro), Antigravity (entry-level limits on AI Pro) and the free Gemini CLI. They are capable, and Gemini’s 1M-token context on paid plans helps with large repositories. But Claude Code is the more mature everyday tool. If coding is a big part of why you are paying, pick Claude. Our getting-started guide to AI coding assistants covers how to set either up safely.
Research and web search
Both search the web on every plan. Gemini’s Deep Research is available on the free plan and can use your Gmail, Drive and Chat as sources, which is useful for internal research. Claude’s Research feature needs Pro or higher, and Claude can search your connected tools through connectors.
Gemini is the better free research assistant. On paid plans the gap closes: both produce multi-source reports with citations, and you should still check the key sources yourself. If research with citations is your main job, also read our Perplexity vs ChatGPT for research comparison.
Integrations: Google Workspace vs Microsoft 365
This section often decides the matter. Gemini is built into Gmail, Docs, Sheets and Vids, and AI Pro adds auto browse in Chrome, where Gemini can carry out tasks in web pages for you. If your company runs on Google Workspace, Gemini is already where you work.
Claude goes the other way. Pro includes Claude for Microsoft 365 and Outlook and Claude in Chrome, plus connectors to third-party apps, Projects for keeping files and instructions together, and Artifacts for documents and small apps you build in chat. For a Microsoft 365 shop, Claude fits more naturally than Gemini.
Images, video and voice
Gemini wins this category outright. It generates and edits images with Google’s Nano Banana models, including on the free plan, generates video on paid plans, and AI Pro and Ultra include Flow credits for filmmaking. Google also offers music generation with Lyria 3.5.
Claude does not generate photos or illustrations. It can produce diagrams, charts and simple graphics with code, which covers most work presentations, but not creative imagery.
Both have voice conversations. Gemini Live also lets you share your camera or screen and talk about what it sees.
Privacy and data use
On consumer plans, both companies can use your chats to improve their models, and both let you limit it. Claude’s Free, Pro and Max plans have a Model Improvement setting you can switch off; if you leave it on, Anthropic keeps data for up to five years, otherwise 30 days. Team and Enterprise content is not used for training by default.
Gemini ties this to the Keep Activity setting, which is on by default with auto-delete after 18 months. A sample of chats is reviewed by humans and kept for up to three years. Temporary chats are not used for training, and Workspace business chats are not human-reviewed or used for training.
For sensitive work, use a business plan on either side, or switch off the relevant setting before you start.
Which should you choose?
- Writers, analysts and consultants: Claude. Better drafts, and long documents work even on the free plan.
- Developers: Claude, for Claude Code. Add Gemini’s free tier for quick questions if you like.
- Google Workspace teams: Gemini. The Gmail and Docs integration saves more time than any model difference.
- Microsoft 365 teams: Claude, for its Microsoft 365 and Outlook integration.
- Budget users: Gemini. AI Plus at $4.99 is the cheapest real upgrade, and AI Pro bundles 5 TB of storage.
- Creators who need images or video: Gemini, since Claude does not generate them.
If you are unsure, use both free plans for a week on your real work. The right choice usually becomes obvious within a few days. If ChatGPT is also on your list, read our ChatGPT vs Claude comparison and ChatGPT review, or browse all our AI tool comparisons.
