In two days Google Cloud became a place to buy models from all three big labs on one invoice. On October 21, 2026 Google said OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Luna are rolling out in private preview to select enterprise customers in Model Garden. On October 22 Anthropic made Claude Models on Google Cloud (Anthropic managed) generally available: the full Claude API, run by Anthropic and billed through Google Cloud Marketplace. That changes where you pay and how you buy, not which model is best. For that question, see our ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini comparison.

OpenAI models on Google Cloud: what is in the preview

Google’s announcement positions the three models this way: GPT-6 Astra for demanding coding, computer use, professional and scientific work; GPT-6.1 Sol for near-Astra intelligence at lower cost; GPT-6 Luna as the fast, cheap option for everyday work at scale.

What Google says customers get:

  • Billing through Google Cloud Marketplace on the Google Cloud invoice, drawing down existing commitments and counting toward Flexible Savings Plans.
  • Codex: Codex CLI and Desktop can use Google Cloud for inference from day one.
  • Data: prompts, context and outputs stay inside the customer’s data perimeter and are not used to train models.
  • Coming soon: zero data retention, Confidential Compute, more OpenAI models, and OpenAI models inside Gemini for business and Google Antigravity.

What is missing: prices and a general availability date. Google’s post has neither, and access is by request. Google describes itself as the only hyperscaler offering all three leading closed model families; that is Google’s claim. If you are not in the preview, there is nothing to plan around yet. Our ChatGPT review covers the models from the consumer side.

Claude on Google Cloud now comes in two versions

Claude has been on Google Cloud for years, run by Google in Model Garden on what most people still call Vertex AI (Google’s docs now say Agent Platform). That option now has a sibling.

Anthropic managed is the native Claude API reached through your Google Cloud project. According to Anthropic’s setup docs, you subscribe to a Marketplace listing, access is controlled with Google Cloud IAM roles (roles/claude.user, roles/claude.admin, roles/claude.viewer) instead of API keys, and you open the Claude Console from the Google Cloud console. Usage is metered in Claude Consumption Units worth $0.01 each and appears on the Google Cloud bill, with no separate Anthropic invoice. Anthropic is the data processor.

It also brings Fast mode for Claude Opus 5.5: up to 2.5 times the output speed for $8 per million input tokens and $40 per million output tokens, double the standard $4 and $20, at the time of writing.

Pick Anthropic managed if you want new Claude features on launch day, or need Managed Agents, the Files API, code execution, Agent Skills, batch processing or Fast mode. Pick Google managed if Google must be the data processor, you need EU data residency or provisioned throughput, or you rely on Google tools such as Model Armor and Agent Engine, which Anthropic names as reasons to stay. Our Claude review covers the models themselves.

What it means for your team

For finance, the news is one bill: Gemini, Claude and (in preview) OpenAI usage can all draw down the same Google Cloud commitment. Talk to your account team before subscribing, because Anthropic says existing discounts cannot be applied to past usage.

For developers, moving from Google managed means swapping the AnthropicVertex SDK client for AnthropicGoogleCloud and calling claude.googleapis.com. The setup creates a new Anthropic organisation, separate from any existing one, including Claude Enterprise, so API keys, workspaces and zero-data-retention arrangements do not carry over.

Claude Opus 5.5 and Sonnet 5.5 have also been available in Google Antigravity for Google Cloud customers since October 20. For model IDs and prices, see our posts on Claude Sonnet 5.5 and Claude Haiku 5.5, and our guide to coding assistants if Codex on Google Cloud is what caught your eye. More launches are tracked in News.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use GPT-6 on Google Cloud?

Only if you are in the preview. Since October 21, 2026, GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Luna are rolling out in private preview to select enterprise customers in Model Garden. Google has not published prices or a general availability date; there is an interest form for access.

What is the difference between Claude Anthropic managed and Google managed on Google Cloud?

Anthropic managed is the Claude API run by Anthropic and reached through your Google Cloud project: Anthropic is the data processor and sets rate limits, and new features arrive the same day as on the Claude API. Google managed is Claude in Model Garden: Google is the data processor and sets quotas, you can choose US or EU multi-region endpoints, but features such as the Files API, code execution, Agent Skills, Message Batches and Managed Agents are not supported.

Is Claude on Vertex AI going away?

No. The Google-managed option continues alongside the new Anthropic-managed one. Google's documentation now calls the platform Agent Platform rather than Vertex AI, and the existing AnthropicVertex SDK client still targets it.

Does Claude on Google Cloud count against my Google Cloud commitment?

Yes for the Anthropic-managed option: it bills through Google Cloud Marketplace, appears on your Google Cloud invoice and draws down existing commitments, according to Anthropic. Discounts cannot be applied to past usage, so talk to your account team before you subscribe.

How much does Claude Opus 5.5 Fast mode cost on Google Cloud?

$8 per million input tokens and $40 per million output tokens at the time of writing, double the standard Opus 5.5 price of $4 and $20. Fast mode is available on the Anthropic-managed option and gives up to 2.5 times the output speed.
