What is folk?

folk is a web CRM for small teams that sell through relationships. It describes itself as the AI CRM for your entire sales motion: you capture prospects from LinkedIn, your inbox or WhatsApp, enrich them with emails and phone numbers, contact them with personalised campaigns and sequences, track deals in pipelines, and let AI assistants handle follow-ups and data upkeep. It runs in the browser, as a desktop app and as a mobile app called Contacts by folk.

The company behind it is Folk Inc. The product and team started in Paris, and folk says more than 5,000 teams use it. Its data model is simple: a workspace contains groups, each group is a customisable database of People, Companies or Deals, and each group gets a pipeline view and a table view by default.

The problem folk solves is data entry. Traditional CRMs assume someone will type in every contact and log every email. folk instead pulls contacts in from where conversations already happen, syncs email, calendar and WhatsApp interactions automatically, and uses AI fields to classify and clean records continuously.

Who it is for

  • Founders and small B2B sales teams who prospect on LinkedIn and Sales Navigator and follow up by email.
  • Agencies managing clients, prospects and freelancers in separate groups.
  • Partnership and business development teams that track relationships more than transactions.
  • VC funds that run deal flow and founder relationships through a pipeline (folk has a dedicated use case for this).

folk is a weaker fit if you need a permanent free CRM, as no free plan is listed. High-volume call centres will want a CRM with a dialer such as Close. Businesses that also deliver projects after the sale, or want a cheaper per-seat price with a free tier, should compare Capsule CRM. Complex enterprise setups with territory management or quoting are outside what folk is built for.

Key features

  • folkX Chrome extension. Captures people from LinkedIn, Sales Navigator, Instagram, X, Google Meet, Facebook and any website, including bulk imports from search results.
  • Groups, views and Deals. Each group has pipeline (Kanban) and table views. Deals let you run custom pipelines; custom objects are on Premium.
  • Enrichment. One-click email enrichment, phone-number enrichment that tries three data partners in turn (added October 2026), company enrichment and automatic merging of duplicates.
  • Magic fields (AI fields) with Auto-fill AI. Prompt-driven fields that find, clean, categorise and extract data and keep running as records change. Examples: label leads B2B or B2C, standardise job titles, or fill qualification fields from your notes.
  • folk assistants. The Research Assistant, Workflow Assistant, Follow-up Assistant and Recap Assistant (a summary of the latest interactions and notes on a person, company or deal), plus an Assistants library with options such as web search and lead scoring.
  • Messages and Sequences. Personalised mail-merge emails to a group from Gmail or Outlook, scheduling, preview before sending, campaign analytics and custom sending domains. Automated follow-up sequences are on Premium.
  • Interactions and sync. Gmail, Outlook, calendar and WhatsApp sync with a shared history, so teammates see who last spoke to a contact. Enterprise can hide internal or sensitive interactions.
  • Tasks, Dashboards and mobile. Tasks with reminders and automation, dashboards for pipeline and team metrics, and the Contacts by folk app with a business card scanner, talk-to-text notes and phone calls from your own number with recording and transcripts (beta).
  • AI connectivity. folk MCP lets ChatGPT and Claude read and update your CRM, Interactions MCP shares interaction history, and there is a REST API and webhooks.

Every plan lists Google SSO, the mobile app, MCP and the Zapier and Make apps. The free trial runs for 14 days on Premium with no credit card, and includes 1,000 messages, unlimited contacts, 500 Magic field generations and 50 contact enrichments. When the trial ends the account is blocked until you upgrade; your data is kept, and you can self-serve one 7-day extension from the Add 7 days banner in Settings & members.

For a three-person team, Premium costs $144 a month on annual billing or $180 a month on monthly billing. If a payment fails, folk gives you 7 days to update the card before the account is temporarily blocked. Check folk.app/pricing before you buy, as prices change.

How to use folk: step-by-step

1. Sign up and complete onboarding

  1. On folk.app, click Try for free. Sign up with Google or with a magic-link email (the link expires after 5 minutes).
  2. Add your details: your name, company and how you want the CRM customised. You can change this later.
  3. Connect your accounts: connect Google or Microsoft so contacts and interactions sync in real time. You can skip this, but sync is what makes folk useful, so do it now.
  4. Download folkX: install the Chrome extension.
  5. Invite your teammates, or do it later from Settings.
  6. Click Start free trial to begin the 14-day Premium trial.

2. Create your groups

  1. Click + in the sidebar, name the group, pick an emoji and choose a contact type: People, Companies or Deals.
  2. folk creates a pipeline view and a table view automatically. Rename the pipeline stages to match your process.
  3. Groups are private by default. Click Share to share one with the team. The sidebar sorts groups into Favorites, Shared to everyone, Shared and Private.
  4. Keep it small: folk recommends three to five groups, for example Prospects, Customers, Partners and Investors.

3. Import existing contacts

  1. In an empty group, choose Import people from a file. In a group that already has contacts, use the three-dot menu and Import CSV.
  2. Upload a .csv, .xls, .xlsx, .tsv or .txt file. folk suggests a mapping for each column; check it before confirming.
  3. Custom fields created during import are text fields, so create select or number fields in advance if you want to filter on them.

4. Capture leads from LinkedIn with folkX

  1. Open a LinkedIn profile or Sales Navigator search and click the folkX extension.
  2. Choose the group to add the person to. For a search results page, use bulk capture to add several people at once.
  3. Back in folk, select the new contacts and run email enrichment to find addresses, or phone-number enrichment if you call. Enrichments count toward your plan’s monthly limits.

5. Qualify with a Magic field

  1. In a group’s table view, add a Magic field (AI field) and write the prompt, for example “Classify this company as B2B or B2C based on its website” or “Rewrite the job title in a standard format”.
  2. Turn on Auto-fill AI so the field fills itself for new and changed records.
  3. Filter or sort the pipeline by the result to decide who to contact first. Magic field runs count toward your monthly quota (2,000 on Standard, 5,000 on Premium).

6. Send a campaign and a follow-up sequence

  1. Select contacts in a group and create a message. Personalise it with variables from your fields, preview it, and schedule or send it from your connected Gmail or Outlook.
  2. On Premium, build a sequence: a first email followed by automated follow-up emails, with scheduling.
  3. Set up a custom sending domain before larger sends, and review campaign analytics after each send.

7. Let the assistants handle upkeep

  1. Use the Follow-up Assistant to help with follow-ups on contacts and deals.
  2. Use the Recap Assistant before a call to get a summary of the latest interactions and notes on a person, company or deal.
  3. Use the Research Assistant for research on contacts and companies and the Workflow Assistant for repeat jobs; both have monthly limits per plan (Research Assistant 200 runs, Workflow Assistant 1,500 on Standard and 10,000 on Premium).

8. Connect folk to ChatGPT or Claude

If your team works in ChatGPT or Claude, connect folk MCP so the assistant can look up contacts, summarise a deal or update fields in plain English. Add Interactions MCP if you also want it to read email and meeting history. Treat write access with care and test on a small group first. To upgrade after the trial, go to Settings > Plans and click upgrade on your chosen plan.

Tips to get better results

  • Connect email and calendar on day one. The shared interaction history is where folk saves the most time.
  • Plan the trial. Fourteen days is short: import, capture 50 leads with folkX and run one campaign in the first week.
  • Write narrow Magic field prompts. “B2B or B2C” works better than “describe this company”, and narrow outputs are easier to filter.
  • Watch the quotas. Enrichment, Magic field runs and messages are monthly caps. Check usage before enriching a large list.
  • Use a separate sending domain. It protects your main domain’s reputation when you run campaigns and sequences.
  • Share groups deliberately. Private-by-default is good for personal networks; shared groups keep the team pipeline in one place.
  • Decide Standard versus Premium early. If you need sequences, Deals pipelines or dashboards, Premium is the plan to buy.

Limitations and common problems

  • No free plan listed. When the trial ends the account is blocked until you pay. Export your data or upgrade before day 14, or use the one-time 7-day extension.
  • Premium gates key sales features. Sequences, custom objects, dashboards, workspace roles and API access are not on Standard.
  • Usage caps. Heavy prospecting teams can hit enrichment and message limits; Enterprise offers custom limits.
  • Per-workspace billing. Separate workspaces are billed separately, so avoid creating extra ones for each team.
  • Calling is limited. Call recording works only from the mobile app and is in beta at the time of writing; there is no power dialer.
  • Third-party AI processing. folk’s sub-processors include OpenAI for enrichment and formatting and ElevenLabs for dictation and call transcripts. folk does not use personal data to train AI models, but check this against your own data policy.

Alternatives

  • Capsule CRM - a simpler, cheaper small-business CRM with a free plan and project boards, but no sequences.
  • Close - built-in calling, SMS and email for phone-heavy inside sales teams.
  • Attio - a flexible data-model CRM for teams that want to design their own objects.
  • HubSpot CRM - a free CRM tier with a broader marketing and service suite.
  • lemlist - if what you actually need is multichannel outreach sequences rather than a CRM; see also our Reply.io vs lemlist comparison.

Verdict

Sign up for folk if your team’s pipeline starts on LinkedIn and in the inbox, and you want contacts captured, enriched and followed up with as little typing as possible. Use the trial to import, capture leads with folkX and run one sequence, then budget for Premium if sequences and Deals matter to you. Skip folk if you need a free CRM, a dialer, or post-sale project tracking; Capsule CRM and Close cover those better.
