What is Tapstitch?

Tapstitch is a print-on-demand (POD) and dropshipping service for custom apparel. You put your designs on blank garments such as T-shirts, hoodies, sweatshirts, sportswear and kids’ clothing, publish them to your online store, and Tapstitch prints, packs and ships each order to your customer under your brand. You never buy stock in advance.

Printing uses DTG (direct-to-garment) and DTF (direct-to-film) with water-based inks, and embroidery is also available. The company lists an address in Dover, Delaware. It describes its scale as “200K+” brands and communities and “4M+” garments shipped; elsewhere on the site it says “over 60,000 creators”, so treat those numbers as marketing claims rather than settled figures.

The problem it solves is the classic one for merch and small clothing brands: you want to sell your designs, but you do not want to order 200 shirts in four sizes and hope they sell. With Tapstitch the minimum order is one item and you pay only when a customer buys.

Who it is for

  • Shopify, Etsy and TikTok Shop sellers who want to add a clothing line without warehouse space or upfront inventory.
  • Creators, streamers and communities selling merch to an audience they already have.
  • Small apparel brands that care about the unboxing and want custom neck labels, hangtags and insert cards rather than a generic blank.
  • Designers testing ideas who want to put ten designs live, see which sell, and only then think about bulk production.

Tapstitch is not the right choice if you need a broad POD catalog of mugs, posters, phone cases and home goods; its focus is clothing. It is also a weaker fit if you need the lowest possible per-unit cost on a proven design. Once a design sells in volume, a bulk order from a local printer is usually cheaper.

Key features

  • Store integrations. The help center lists Shopify, TikTok, Etsy, Wix, Squarespace, WooCommerce, Shoplazza and BigCommerce. Orders from a connected store sync automatically, typically within five minutes. You can also order directly without a store, which is how you buy samples. (The homepage still shows an “Ecommerce integrations” section marked “coming soon”; the help center lists the integrations above as available.)
  • Design Tool. Upload artwork, set its placement on each print area and pick from Layouts. Embroidery designs are set up in the same tool.
  • AI Design. A newer Design Tool feature that generates print templates. Easy Edit mode lets you change highlighted keywords in a template; Freestyle mode takes a full prompt. There is also prompt-to-image with art styles and Prompt Presets. Generated images have a solid background that is removed before production, and Tapstitch warns that feathered or soft edges are unsuitable for DTF printing.
  • Batch Design. Design up to 10 products in one session. Design Binding keeps artwork size and placement in sync across bound products, so one change applies to the whole set.
  • Auto Order Submission and Auto Payments. Choose how synced orders are submitted (for example Manual Submission or Automatically (1 Hour)) and let payments go through automatically for hands-off fulfilment.
  • Branding. Custom clothing labels (rectangle 2 x 6 cm or square 4 x 4 cm, black or white, reviewed within 2 business days), Custom Hangtags (13 x 5 cm, 350gsm, double-sided) and Custom Insert Cards (13 x 9 cm or 13 x 19 cm, one per order, charged per order). Labels and hangtags are for internationally fulfilled orders only.
  • US fulfilment. A fulfilment centre in Los Angeles handles US-available items, which Tapstitch says arrive in 3-6 business days. A catalog filter shows which items qualify.
  • Wallet and Credits. Credits from promotions, research programs or compensation can be used at checkout. They cannot be withdrawn, and expiry rolls forward to 365 days from the latest issuance.

Pricing

Tapstitch has no subscription plans and no pricing page. You pay per order: the product base price plus shipping, charged when the order is placed. Your profit is your retail price minus those two costs. Prices below were checked on the Tapstitch site at the time of writing (19 October 2026).

Shipping is the part to check carefully. Tapstitch offers several methods, with published average transit times (excluding production) of:

Shipping methodAverage transit95% of orders within

Tapstitch’s help center gives example rates, such as $4.96 for the first T-shirt to the US by Special Line, but that article dates from August 2025. Use the shipping calculator at tapstitch.com/shipping or the product page for current rates before you set prices. Shipping is Delivered Duty Paid (DDP), so import duties and taxes are included; Tapstitch says US customs fees are covered, with rare exceptions for remote non-US areas.

Payment methods include Visa, Mastercard, American Express, JCB, PayPal, Afterpay, Google Pay and Credit Key business financing. All charges are in US dollars. Your store platform’s own fees (a Shopify plan, Etsy listing and transaction fees) are separate.

How to use Tapstitch: step-by-step

1. Create an account and connect your store

  1. Go to tapstitch.com and sign up for a free account.
  2. Connect your sales channel from the integrations area. Pick Shopify, Etsy, TikTok, Wix, Squarespace, WooCommerce, Shoplazza or BigCommerce and approve access in that platform.
  3. Add a payment method. You will be charged product cost plus shipping for each order, so a card or PayPal on file avoids orders stalling.

If you do not have a store yet, you can still design products and place orders directly, which is useful for samples.

2. Choose a product

  1. Open the catalog and browse by type, such as T-shirts, hoodies or kids’ clothing.
  2. If most buyers are in the US, use the filter for US-available items. These ship from Los Angeles and arrive faster.
  3. Check the product page for the base price, sizes, colours, print method and shipping rates to your main market.

3. Design the product

  1. Open the Design Tool and upload high-resolution artwork, ideally a PNG with a transparent background.
  2. Position it on each print area, or start from a preset in Layouts.
  3. To generate artwork, open AI Design. Use Easy Edit to change the highlighted words in a template (for example, your team name or a city), or Freestyle to write a full prompt with subject, style and colours. Avoid soft, feathered edges if the product prints with DTF.
  4. If you are launching a set of products with the same artwork, use Batch Design for up to 10 products and turn on Design Binding so size and placement stay identical.
  5. Preview each colour and remove colours where the design does not read well.

4. Add branding

  1. Upload a custom clothing label if you want your own neck label (rectangle or square, black or white). Allow up to 2 business days for review.
  2. Add a Custom Hangtag or Custom Insert Card if you want a branded touch in the parcel.
  3. Remember that labels and hangtags apply only to internationally fulfilled orders, not US-fulfilled ones.

5. Publish, price and order a sample

  1. Publish the product to your connected store.
  2. Set the retail price: start from product cost plus shipping, add your store platform’s fees and payment fees, then add your margin.
  3. Order one unit for yourself as a sample. There is no discounted sample program, so it is a normal single-item order, and samples cannot be returned. Check print quality, fit and how long it took to arrive.

6. Automate order handling

  1. Open the Auto Order Submission settings and pick a strategy. Manual Submission lets you review each order; Automatically (1 Hour) submits orders after an hour, which gives you a window to fix address errors.
  2. Turn on Auto Payments so submitted orders are paid and go to production without you.
  3. Check the orders list regularly. Orders can be cancelled for a full refund only while they are “In Review”.

Tips to get better results

  • Always order a sample of each new product before promoting it. Fabric weight and print vibrancy are hard to judge from mockups.
  • Price from the live shipping rate, not the old examples. Shipping can be a large share of the cost on low-priced T-shirts.
  • Use US fulfilment for US buyers where the product allows it. Faster delivery cuts “where is my order” emails.
  • Prepare print-ready files. High resolution, transparent background and hard edges give cleaner DTF prints.
  • Use Design Binding for collections so a placement fix does not have to be repeated on ten products.
  • Give yourself a review window. The one-hour automatic submission is a good default if you want to catch mistakes without approving every order by hand.
  • Check rights on AI artwork. Avoid prompts based on brands, characters or living artists, and check each marketplace’s rules on AI-generated designs.

Limitations and common problems

  • Apparel focus. If you also want mugs, posters or home goods, you will need a second POD supplier such as Printify.
  • Shipping varies a lot. Delivery runs from about 5 days to 25 days depending on method. Show realistic delivery estimates in your store.
  • Branding gaps on US orders. Clothing labels and hangtags are not offered for US-fulfilled orders, so US and international buyers may receive different packaging.
  • Production times. Tapstitch targets 3-7 business days for small orders and ships no later than the 8th business day after payment. If there is no tracking by the end of the 7th business day, it offers compensation of up to 10% of product value.
  • Returns cost you. Sellers pay return shipping unless the item is defective, and hygiene items and samples are non-returnable. Write a returns policy for your store that matches these rules.
  • Inconsistent public information. The homepage and help center disagree on integrations and on customer numbers. The help center is the more detailed and recently updated source.
  • Privacy and security disclosures. The privacy policy (last updated February 2025) says Tapstitch does not sell personal data and names Stripe, PayPal, Google Analytics and Facebook Ads among the services it shares data with. It publishes no SOC 2 or ISO certification, no data processing agreement and no statement on AI training. Whether Tapstitch offers a public API is not published.

Alternatives

  • Printify - a much broader POD catalog with a choice of print providers per product and a free plan. See our Printify guide.
  • Spocket - dropshipping of ready-made products from suppliers rather than printing your own designs. See our Spocket guide.
  • Sellfy - a hosted store for creators that includes its own print-on-demand merch alongside digital products. See our Sellfy guide.
  • Printful and Gelato - other established POD services worth comparing on product price and shipping to your market.
  • Local bulk printing - cheaper per unit once a design is proven.

If you also ship your own stock, a multi-carrier label tool such as Shippo helps. Browse the full list in our ecommerce tools directory.

Verdict

Sign up for Tapstitch if you want to sell your own clothing designs with no monthly fee, no stock and no minimum order, and you value branding touches like custom labels and insert cards. The pay-per-order model makes it cheap to test ideas. Before you launch, order a sample, check the live shipping rate for your main market and decide whether US fulfilment covers the products you want to sell. If you need a wide catalog beyond apparel, or the lowest unit cost on a proven bestseller, a broader POD platform or bulk printing will serve you better.
