What is Printify?
Printify is a print-on-demand platform. You put your designs on blank products from its catalog, such as t-shirts, mugs, posters and phone cases, and list them in your online store or on a marketplace. When a customer buys, a partner print provider prints and ships that one item. You hold no stock and pay nothing up front.
Printify does not print anything itself. It runs a network of production partners: the homepage claims 141 production facilities, delivery to 209 countries and territories, more than 2,000 products and “10M+ sellers”. Those are vendor figures. For most products you can choose between several print providers, which differ in price, quality, location and speed.
The business model matters for your margins. Printify earns its money on the production price of each item, not on platform fees. You set the retail price in your store. Your profit is the retail price minus the product price and shipping. The company was founded in Riga, Latvia in 2015 and lists offices in Wilmington (US), Riga and Tallinn.
Printify also has AI tools: a free AI Image Generator in the design editor, one-click AI background removal, and AI Mockups for lifestyle product photos on paid plans.
Who it is for
- Etsy and Shopify sellers who want to add custom products without buying inventory.
- Designers, illustrators and creators who want to test merch ideas cheaply before committing.
- Content creators and small brands selling merch to an audience, including through a free Pop-Up Store with no website of their own.
- Established sellers with steady volume, who can use Premium’s product discounts to widen margins.
Printify is not the right fit if you want full control over print quality and packaging, very fast shipping on every product, or the lowest unit cost at high volume. Bulk printing with a local printer, or your own fulfilment, beats print-on-demand on unit cost once volumes are large. It also does not suit sellers who need products that are not in the catalog.
Key features
- Catalog and print providers. Browse the catalog, pick a product and compare print providers on price, production location and shipping. The provider you choose determines quality and delivery time.
- Product Creator / Mockup Generator. The free design editor. It supports pattern creation, one-click AI background removal, cropping, Fit and Fill, SVG upload, templates and up to 10 layers per print area (20 for stickers). It also includes 150+ free graphics and automatic enhancement of low-resolution uploads.
- AI Image Generator. Inside the Product Creator under New design. Free with a Printify account, limited to 15 generations per 24 hours, and powered by OpenAI. You can use the results on products you sell, but Printify warns that AI images may not be protected by copyright.
- AI Mockups. Lifestyle mockups generated from options such as model type, pose, expression and background. Premium and Enterprise only.
- Integrations. Connect Shopify, Etsy, eBay, TikTok, Amazon and other channels. Publishing pushes products to your store; orders flow back to Printify automatically.
- Printify Pop-Up Store. A free hosted storefront with no monthly, setup, listing or hosting fees. Profit is paid through Stripe. 2026 additions include a Store Builder, buyer personalisation, custom domains, QR code checkout and product collections. An AI Store Builder and an analytics dashboard are announced as coming soon, with no date.
- Printify Connect. An order management and customer support layer, included in Premium.
- Manual orders and custom order import. Place orders yourself, for samples or offline sales, or import orders from other sources. Both are on the Free plan.
Pricing
Printify’s plan fee is separate from what you pay per order. On every plan you pay the product price plus shipping when an order is placed. Prices below are from Printify’s pricing page at the time of writing (checked 18 October 2026). They are shown in US dollars; cards can be charged in USD, EUR, CAD, GBP or AUD.

How to read this:
- Product prices vary by product and print provider. Printify’s own calculator example uses an $8.77 fulfilment cost, before shipping and taxes. Check the exact price for the product and provider you pick.
- Premium is a margin play. The discounts are “up to” figures. Premium pays off only when your order volume makes the discount worth more than the fee. Work it out with your own sales numbers.
- Cancelling Premium. You can cancel anytime before renewal, but Premium payments are non-refundable. Downgrading keeps your stores and products and returns you to standard product prices.
- Your store platform charges separately. Shopify subscriptions and Etsy listing and transaction fees are not part of Printify’s pricing.
How to use Printify: step-by-step
1. Sign up and connect a sales channel
- Go to printify.com and create a free account.
- Open Manage my stores and click Connect, or add a new store from the store menu.
- Choose your channel, for example Etsy or Shopify, and approve access in that platform.
- On Etsy, add Printify as a production partner in Etsy’s Shop Manager. Etsy’s policies require it for print-on-demand listings.
If you do not have a store, create a Printify Pop-Up Store instead. You will need a Stripe account to receive payouts.
2. Pick a product and a print provider
- Open the Catalog and choose a product type, such as a t-shirt or mug.
- Compare the print providers listed for that product. Look at the production price, the shipping cost to your main market, where the provider is located and its colour and size options.
- Choose a provider and click to start designing.
The provider is the most important choice you make. Two providers can sell the same blank shirt with different print quality and delivery times.
3. Design the product
- In the Product Creator, upload your artwork. Use a high-resolution PNG, or an SVG for vector designs.
- Position it with Fit and Fill or by dragging, and check each print area (front, back, sleeve and so on).
- Use AI background removal if your image has a background you do not want.
- To generate artwork, choose New design and use the AI Image Generator. Write a specific prompt that describes subject, style and colours. You get 15 generations per 24 hours.
- Preview the mockups for each colour variant. Remove colours where your design does not read well.
4. Set prices and publish
- Write a title and description. Use the words your buyers search for, such as “funny cat mug” rather than a design code.
- Set the retail price for each variant. Start from the product price plus shipping, then add your margin and the fees your sales platform charges.
- Click Publish (for example, Publish to Etsy). The listing appears in your store within minutes.
- Open the listing in your store and finish what Printify cannot set, such as some tags, categories and shop sections.
5. Order a sample and handle orders
- Before you promote a product, order a sample with a manual order. Check print quality, sizing and how long delivery took.
- When customers buy, orders flow to Printify automatically. Check the orders list for any that need action, such as a payment or address issue.
- Keep a payment method on file. Printify charges you the product price and shipping when an order goes to production.
Using the Pop-Up Store instead of your own store
If you do not want to run Shopify or Etsy, build a free Pop-Up Store with the Store Builder. Add products and group them into collections. Connect a custom domain if you have one, and share the link or a QR code. Printify deducts production and shipping from each sale and pays the rest through Stripe. It is a good way to test demand before paying for a store platform.
Tips to get better results
- Always order samples. It is the only reliable way to judge a provider’s print quality.
- Choose providers near your buyers. Shorter distances usually mean lower shipping costs and faster delivery.
- Price with every fee in mind. Include product cost, shipping, platform fees, payment fees and any discounts you plan to run.
- Use high-resolution artwork. Printify can enhance low-resolution uploads, but starting sharp gives better prints.
- Check rights for AI images. Do not use prompts based on brands, characters or living artists. AI images may not be protected by copyright, so others may copy them.
- Start with a few products. Test ten designs, see what sells, then expand. A huge catalog of untested designs is hard to maintain.
- Do the Premium maths. Multiply your monthly orders by the discount on your products. If the saving is less than the fee, stay on Free.
- Write descriptions for search. Marketplace search drives most print-on-demand sales, so clear titles and tags matter.
Limitations and common problems
- Variable quality and delivery. Each print provider prints differently. Read provider details, order samples, and switch providers if quality slips.
- Thin margins on the Free plan. Product price plus shipping can leave little room once platform fees are added. Price carefully or use Premium discounts at volume.
- Store limits. The Free plan allows 5 stores and Premium 10. Most sellers never hit this, but agencies running many shops will.
- Premium is non-refundable. Try the Free plan first and upgrade only once you have steady sales.
- AI limits. The AI Image Generator allows 15 images per 24 hours, and AI Mockups need Premium. The AI Store Builder for Pop-Up Stores is announced but has no release date.
- Marketplace rules. Etsy requires you to disclose Printify as a production partner. Check each marketplace’s rules on print-on-demand and AI-generated designs.
- Security disclosures. Printify’s security page says data is encrypted in transit and at rest, and that its security management system is audited internally and externally. It does not publish certifications such as SOC 2, ISO 27001 or PCI DSS, where data is stored, or whether merchant data is used to train AI.
Alternatives
- Printful - a major print-on-demand rival; compare its product prices and shipping with Printify’s.
- Gelato - another print-on-demand platform with its own catalog and production network.
- Tapstitch - print-on-demand focused on apparel and merchandise; listed in our directory.
- Spocket - a different model: dropshipping ready-made products from suppliers rather than printing your designs. See our Spocket guide.
- Local bulk printing - cheaper per unit once you know a design sells in volume.
Once you ship your own stock alongside print-on-demand items, a multi-carrier shipping tool such as Shippo handles those labels. For customer questions about orders, see our Gorgias guide. Verdict
Printify is one of the easiest ways to start selling custom products. The Free plan costs nothing until a customer buys, the catalog is wide, and the free Product Creator and AI Image Generator cover most design needs. Your results depend on the print provider, so order samples and compare providers before you promote anything. Sellers with steady monthly volume should do the maths on Premium, whose discounts can outweigh the fee. If you need tight control over quality, packaging and unit cost, bulk printing or your own fulfilment will serve you better.
