Kit vs ActiveCampaign comes down to what your email list is for. Kit (formerly ConvertKit) is built for creators whose list is the product: it sends broadcasts free to up to 10,000 subscribers and lets you sell paid newsletters and digital products on every plan. ActiveCampaign is an automation platform for small and mid-sized businesses where email feeds a sales funnel, with branching journeys, site tracking and lead scoring. Price depends heavily on list size: at 3,000 subscribers, Kit Creator costs $59 a month against $99 for ActiveCampaign Starter, and at 10,000 Kit’s Free plan still costs $0 while ActiveCampaign Starter is $189 (monthly billing, at the time of writing). Prices were checked on both vendors’ pages and help centres on 21 October 2026 and are in US dollars.

Both tools have full setup guides in our directory: Kit and ActiveCampaign.

Pricing at 1,000, 3,000 and 10,000 subscribers

This is where most comparisons go wrong, because both tools price by list size but use different bands. Figures are monthly billing, with the annual-billing monthly equivalent in brackets, at the time of writing.

List sizeKit FreeKit CreatorKit Creator ProAC StarterAC PlusAC ProAC Enterprise
1,000$0$39 (about $33)$79 (about $66)$19 ($15)$59 ($49)$99 ($79)$179 ($145)
3,000$0$59 (about $49)check kit.com$99 ($79)$179 ($145)$259 ($205)$469 ($375)
10,000$0check kit.comcheck kit.com$189 ($149)$239 ($189)$469 ($375)$739 ($589)

ActiveCampaign figures come from the price data its pricing page loads. Kit’s $39 and $79 come from its pricing page, and the $59 tier “for up to 3,000 subscribers” from its help centre; Kit’s annual prices are derived from its “2 months free” annual billing. Kit’s paid prices at 10,000 subscribers are not on any Kit page we could read, so we do not quote them.

Three things the table hides:

  • ActiveCampaign has no 3,000 band. Its contact bands run 1,000, 2,500, 5,000, 7,500 and 10,000, so a 3,000-contact list pays the 5,000 price. That is why Starter jumps from $49 at 2,500 to $99.
  • Who counts as a contact differs. Kit bills confirmed subscribers, and tiers move up automatically as you grow; cleaning the list can let you drop a tier. According to ActiveCampaign’s help centre, accounts created on or after 3 November 2025 count every contact, unsubscribed ones included, unless you archive them.
  • CRM costs extra on ActiveCampaign. Deals and lead scoring need the Pipelines add-on, which ActiveCampaign’s price data lists at $49 a month on Plus ($39 billed annually). Plus with Pipelines at 1,000 contacts is $108 a month on monthly billing.

Free plan and free trial

Kit’s Free plan covers up to 10,000 subscribers with unlimited forms, landing pages and broadcasts, tagging and segmentation, digital products and paid subscriptions, and Creator Network Recommendations. What it does not include, according to Kit’s newest help article, is Visual Automations or email sequences, so there is no automated welcome series. Paid Kit plans have a 14-day trial.

ActiveCampaign has no free plan. Its 14-day trial needs no credit card and gives you Pro-plan features, but it is a sandbox: one user, up to 100 email sends, and test emails go only to you. The pricing page also advertises a full refund if you are not satisfied after 30 days.

Automation and segmentation

ActiveCampaign goes deeper here, and it is the main reason to pay its prices. Its automation builder chains triggers (form submissions, tags, site visits, email replies and more), conditions, waits and actions, with business goals that move contacts forward when they convert: 15 active goals on Starter, 25 on Plus and 200 on Pro and Enterprise. The catch on Starter is a limit of 5 actions per automation and “limited” segmentation, which is enough for a short welcome flow and little else. Plus removes the action cap, and Pro adds predictive sending, conditional content (one email with blocks that change per contact) and attribution reporting.

Kit’s automation is simpler and aimed at creator funnels. On Creator and above you get Visual Automations (an entry point such as “Joins a form”, then actions such as adding a tag or starting a sequence), email sequences with per-email delays, and Rules for one-step trigger and action pairs. Segments are built from tags, forms and purchases. Creator Pro adds subscriber scoring, which rates each subscriber from one to five stars by engagement, plus Insights dashboards. For “subscribe, get a welcome series, buy the course” Kit is enough. For journeys that branch on what someone did on your website, ActiveCampaign is the stronger tool.

Site tracking, CRM and lead scoring

ActiveCampaign includes site and link tracking on every plan, so automations can react to page visits. Custom event tracking, for actions inside your app or store, starts on Plus. Its CRM features have moved into paid add-ons: Pipelines covers pipeline management, deal records, account records and lead scoring, and Pipelines & Sales Engagement adds automated one-to-one email and win probability. Both are available on Plus, Pro and Enterprise, not on Starter.

Kit has no deal pipeline or sales records, and website visit tracking does not appear in its plan lists. It knows what subscribers did in your emails, forms and checkouts, not who browsed your pricing page. If you need a sales CRM rather than a marketing list, look at a dedicated tool such as Close and connect it to your email platform.

Monetisation: paid newsletters, products and recommendations

This is Kit’s strongest section. Kit Commerce works on every plan, Free included, with no monthly fee: you pay 3.5% plus $0.30 per transaction in USD. You can sell digital products, paid newsletter subscriptions, pay-what-you-want offers, payment plans and coupons, add upsells at checkout, and since October 2026 build sales pages with Product blocks. The Creator Network lets newsletters recommend each other to grow lists, and paid plans can earn from Paid Recommendations and run Newsletter Sponsorships.

ActiveCampaign does not host products or subscriptions. It markets for your store: standard ecommerce integrations (Shopify, Square, WooCommerce) on every plan, product catalogues and coupons in emails from Plus, and premium integrations (BigCommerce, Magento, Shopify Plus) and recurring payments from Pro. If you are a creator who wants a storefront without Kit, Sellfy is another option.

AI features and AI-assistant connections

Both tools now connect to Claude and ChatGPT, which matters if you already draft in an AI assistant. The Kit MCP (Kit calls it AI Connectors) is on paid plans; since 13 October 2026 Kit is listed in Claude’s Connectors Marketplace. It can draft broadcasts, sequences and landing pages that open in Kit’s editor for you to review, tag subscribers and report on performance. Inside Kit, the AI subject line generator is unlimited on paid plans and limited to 5 uses on Free.

ActiveCampaign’s Active Intelligence includes an AI campaign builder that drafts a campaign from one prompt, an AI automation builder, AI-suggested segments, and predictive sending on Pro and up. Every plan includes 500 AI credits a month; core AI tasks keep working when credits run out, and credits pay for extras such as image generation and translated campaigns. ActiveCampaign also offers an MCP connection for AI assistants. If you want an assistant to build multi-step automations, ActiveCampaign does more; if you want it to write your newsletter, Kit’s connector is the more direct path.

Email editor, forms and landing pages

Kit’s editor is template-led and plain by design, which suits text-heavy newsletters. Forms come as inline, modal, slide-in or sticky bar, and the landing page editor was rebuilt in June 2026 with more than 20 templates. Landing pages are on every Kit plan.

ActiveCampaign’s Email Designer is a drag-and-drop builder with structures and content blocks, and split testing for campaigns. Starter forms are “standard and inline only”; landing pages, custom branded forms and site messages start on Plus.

Users, sending limits and deliverability

Kit Creator includes 2 users and Creator Pro unlimited team members; Kit describes broadcasts as unlimited. ActiveCampaign includes 1, 1, 3 and 5 users on Starter, Plus, Pro and Enterprise, with paid extra seats, and caps monthly email sends at 10 times your contact limit on Starter and Plus, 12 times on Pro and 15 times on Enterprise.

On both, authenticate your own domain before you send at volume: Kit calls it a Verified Sending Domain, and ActiveCampaign walks you through DKIM, SPF and DMARC records for your sending domain.

Alternatives worth a look

  • GetResponse: email plus webinars and a course creator, with a free plan.
  • Moosend: cheap automation priced by contacts, if you can live without a free plan.
  • Sender: free plan for up to 2,500 subscribers and low paid prices.
  • Campaign Monitor: design-led templates for brands and agencies.
  • Mailchimp: the familiar default, which gets expensive as lists grow.

Which should you choose?

  • Newsletter writer under 10,000 subscribers, broadcasts only: Kit Free. Nothing else here is free at that size.
  • Creator selling a paid newsletter, course or digital products: Kit Creator, or Creator Pro if you need a team or subscriber scoring.
  • Solo business with about 1,000 contacts and a simple welcome flow: ActiveCampaign Starter is the cheapest paid plan at $19 a month, but the 5-action limit and missing landing pages arrive fast. Choose Kit Creator if you also sell products.
  • B2B or service business nurturing leads with site visits and a sales hand-off: ActiveCampaign Plus with the Pipelines add-on, or Pro for predictive sending and attribution. Kit cannot do this job.
  • Ecommerce store with abandoned-cart and order journeys: ActiveCampaign, on Pro if you need premium store integrations or recurring payments.
  • Team of three or more: ActiveCampaign Pro includes 3 users; Kit Creator Pro includes unlimited team members, which can be cheaper for a creator team.

Kit and ActiveCampaign are both PromptWises partners; that does not change the verdict. If your list is the business, pick Kit. If email is one part of a sales machine, pick ActiveCampaign. More head-to-heads are on our comparisons page.

Frequently asked questions

Is Kit cheaper than ActiveCampaign?

It depends on list size. At 1,000 contacts ActiveCampaign Starter costs $19 a month against $39 for Kit Creator. At 3,000 the order flips: Kit Creator is $59 a month, while ActiveCampaign has no 3,000 band and charges its 5,000-contact price, $99 on Starter. Kit's Free plan covers broadcasts for up to 10,000 subscribers, where ActiveCampaign Starter costs $189 a month (monthly billing, at the time of writing).

Is Kit the same as ConvertKit?

Yes. ConvertKit renamed itself Kit and moved to kit.com. It is the same product and company, and existing ConvertKit accounts carried over. Older comparisons that say ConvertKit usually quote its old prices and old free plan.

Does ActiveCampaign have a free plan like Kit?

No. ActiveCampaign offers a 14-day free trial with no credit card, and the trial is limited to test sends (up to 100 emails, one user). Kit has a permanent Free plan for up to 10,000 subscribers, but it covers broadcasts, forms, landing pages and product sales only; Visual Automations and sequences need a paid plan.

Can Kit replace a CRM?

No. Kit has tags, segments, custom fields and (on Creator Pro) subscriber scoring, but no deal pipeline or sales records. ActiveCampaign offers deals, pipelines, account records and lead scoring through its paid Pipelines add-on, available on Plus and higher plans and not on Starter.

Which is better for a paid newsletter, Kit or ActiveCampaign?

Kit. Paid subscriptions and digital products work on every Kit plan, including Free, for a fee of 3.5% plus $0.30 per sale in USD, and the Creator Network adds recommendations and sponsorships. ActiveCampaign connects to stores such as Shopify or WooCommerce but does not host subscriptions or sell products itself.
