On 22 October Google expanded Gemini-powered speech translation in Google Meet to 63 languages, in any combination in the same meeting, with automatic language detection, on web, Android and iOS (Workspace Updates). Until now it worked between English and five languages, with one language pair set for the whole meeting. Domains on the Rapid Release track get it from 22 October; Scheduled Release domains from 2 November.

What changed in Google Meet speech translation

Meet now detects which language each person is speaking, even when several languages are in play or a speaker switches mid-sentence. Each listener picks the language they want to hear and can list languages they already understand, so those are left alone. Translated captions are kept in sync with the translated audio. Google says the feature runs on its Gemini 3.5 Live Translate model.

If you have seen “70+ languages” in earlier coverage, that is the model Google announced in June, when Meet translation was a private preview. The feature now rolling out supports 63; the Meet help page lists them, from Afrikaans and Arabic to Hindi, Japanese and Vietnamese.

Google Meet hardware rooms can hear translations of remote participants, but speech from the room itself is not translated for others.

Which plans get it and how long it runs

In a scheduled meeting, the organiser’s plan decides: if they qualify, everyone in the meeting can use it, guests from other domains included. In a direct 1:1 call, it works if either person has an eligible plan.

PlanTranslation limit per meeting
Workspace Business Standard, Business Plus90 minutes
Workspace Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus90 minutes
Workspace Frontline Plus, Google AI Pro for Education90 minutes
Google AI Pro90 minutes
Google AI Ultra, AI Expanded Access8 hours

Google’s announcement also lists AI Ultra Access for the 8-hour limit; the help page does not mention it yet. For what Google’s consumer AI plans cost and include, see our Gemini review.

What it does not cover

Speech translation does not work in live streams, meeting recordings, client-side encrypted meetings, dial-in or third-party interoperability calls, or for people using adaptive audio. It is not available to participants under 18 or in unsupported regions, and an admin can switch it off. Each person decides whether their own speech is translated, and Google says no audio is saved and its models are not trained on your voice.

Google’s own help page sets expectations on quality: live translation makes more mistakes than translating text or recordings, with errors in grammar, accents and noun gender, and it runs a few seconds behind the speaker. Do not rely on it for contract terms or medical detail without a human check.

It also only works inside Meet. Teams that meet on Zoom or Microsoft Teams and want notes in many languages can look at meeting assistants such as MeetGeek, which transcribe and summarise rather than translate speech live; more options are on our AI research tools page.

How to turn it on

For users it is off at the start of every meeting. On a computer, hover over the captions and translation button, choose Translate speech, pick the language you want to hear, and select Translate me if you want others to hear you in their language. On Android and iOS, update the Meet app first.

For admins it is on by default in eligible editions wherever the Gemini for Meet setting is enabled. You can limit it by organisational unit or group in Admin console > Apps > Google Workspace > Google Meet > Gemini settings. Google says visibility and synced captions may vary during the first days of the rollout, which takes up to 15 days on the Scheduled track.

Also new: Docs Live on mobile

The same week, Google started rolling out Docs Live in the Google Docs app on Android and iOS. You talk through what you need, such as a project update or a customer pitch, and Gemini builds a structured draft, optionally pulling context from Gmail, Drive, Chat and the web. In the app it sits under Insert > “Create with voice”, it is English only, and it is on by default where Gemini in Docs is enabled, on the same paid plans except Frontline Plus. It pairs with the voice assistant Google added to Gmail, covered in our post on Gmail’s AI Inbox and Gmail Live. More updates are in our news section.

Frequently asked questions

How many languages does Google Meet speech translation support?

63, in any combination within the same meeting, with automatic detection of the spoken language. The "over 70 languages" figure from June describes Google's underlying Gemini 3.5 Live Translate model, not the Meet feature.

Is Google Meet speech translation free?

No. In a scheduled meeting the organiser needs an eligible paid Workspace edition (such as Business Standard or Plus) or a Google AI Pro or Ultra plan. Once they have it, every participant can use it, including guests from other domains. In a 1:1 call, either person's plan is enough.

How long can you use speech translation in a Meet call?

Up to 90 minutes per meeting on eligible base Workspace plans and Google AI Pro, and up to 8 hours on Google AI Ultra and the AI Expanded Access add-on. Google's announcement also lists AI Ultra Access for the 8-hour limit.

Does Google Meet translate recordings or live streams?

No. Speech translation does not work in recordings or live streams, client-side encrypted meetings, dial-in or third-party interoperability calls, or with adaptive audio. It is also unavailable to users under 18 and in some regions.

How do I turn on speech translation in Google Meet?

It is off at the start of every meeting. On a computer, hover over the captions and translation button, choose Translate speech, pick the language you want to hear and select Translate me if you want others to hear you translated. Admins control it under Admin console > Apps > Google Workspace > Google Meet > Gemini settings.
