The best AI agent builder depends on the job: MindStudio for building your own no-code agents cheaply, Lindy for an assistant that works your inbox and calendar, Zapier Agents if you already use Zapier, n8n if you want to self-host, and Copilot Studio or Gemini Enterprise if your company lives in Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace. For phone calls and website visitors, buy a ready-made agent (Vida, Expertise.ai) instead of building one. And if you built anything on OpenAI’s Agent Builder, export it now: it shuts down on 30 November 2026.

Prices are at the time of writing, checked on vendor pricing pages on 26 October 2026, excluding tax. MindStudio, Vida, Turbotic and Expertise.ai are partners in our AI agents directory; partner status did not decide any pick. How we picked: vendor pricing pages, docs and changelogs, not hands-on builds (see our editorial policy).

What an AI agent builder is (and the four kinds you will find)

An AI agent is a language model plus instructions, a set of tools or connected apps, and a trigger. Unlike a fixed automation, it decides which steps to take toward a goal: read the email, look up the customer, draft the reply, update the CRM.

Pick the kind first; most lists mix four different products:

  1. No-code builders (MindStudio, Lindy, Zapier Agents): you design your own agents visually or in plain English.
  2. Suite agents (Copilot Studio, Gemini Enterprise, ChatGPT workspace agents): agent building inside a platform your company already pays for, with your data and permissions already connected.
  3. Ready-made vertical agents (Vida for phone calls, Expertise.ai for websites): the job is defined; you configure rather than build.
  4. Developer frameworks (OpenAI Agents SDK, LangGraph, CrewAI): code libraries, outside the scope of this guide.

How AI agent builders charge (and how to estimate your bill)

Every platform meters something different, so compare the unit, not just the plan.

ToolYou pay forWhat countsIncluded on the cheapest paid plan
MindStudioPlan + model tokens at costOne agent execution (run)Unlimited runs
LindyCredits per active userCredits per action (rates unpublished)3,000 credits/mo

Gemini EnterpriseSeatsPer user per monthOne Business seat

TurboticExecutions and chatsAutomation runs, assistant chats200 executions, 100 chats

Execution- and run-based plans (n8n, MindStudio) are easiest to forecast; credit systems (Lindy, Copilot Studio) are hardest, because the cost of one action is not printed next to the plan. Trial a week of real work, multiply, then set a cap: MindStudio lets you set monthly workspace and user budgets that suspend usage when exceeded, and Copilot Studio offers prepaid Commit Units (Microsoft says up to 20% cheaper) with pay-as-you-go overflow billed through Azure.

Best no-code builder for most people: MindStudio

MindStudio builds agents and small AI apps in a visual workflow editor, with TypeScript Workflow Scripts when you need logic the blocks do not cover. You get 200+ models through its own router without API keys, or you can bring your own keys. Agents can run on demand, on a schedule, from an email, a webhook, an API call, a Chrome extension, an embed on your website, or as an MCP server for other AI tools.

Free covers one agent and 1,000 runs a month; Individual is $20 a month or $16 billed yearly for unlimited agents and runs. Model usage comes from a prepaid balance at provider rates, with no markup per MindStudio. It states your data is never used for training and lists SOC 2 Type II.

Weak spots: usage is a second bill to watch, Business is custom-priced, and its public release log stops at February 2026. Full walkthrough: our MindStudio guide.

Best ready-made assistant: Lindy

Lindy is closer to a configurable assistant than a blank canvas: agents that triage email, manage calendars, take meeting notes and, with computer use, operate web apps.

Free is $50 of credits for seven days, no card. Team starts at $29.99 a month per active user for 3,000 credits each, pooled across the team; top-ups cost $10 per 1,000. Enterprise adds HIPAA compliance with a signed BAA, SSO and SCIM, and audit logs.

The catch: the pricing page does not say how many credits an action costs, so test before rolling out.

Best if you already use Zapier: Zapier Agents

Zapier Agents lets you describe a job in plain English; the agent can act only in the apps you have connected to Zapier, using the triggers and actions you set up.

Free gives 400 activities a month; Pro is $400 a year ($33.33 a month) for 1,500. Activities do not consume Zap tasks, but Agents is billed separately from Zapier’s regular plans, and Team accounts share one pool.

For technical teams: n8n

n8n is a workflow tool first, with agents, MCP and AI nodes on every plan. It charges per workflow execution however many steps it has, which makes long agent workflows cheap. Its pricing page served us euro prices (it shows local currency by location): Starter €20 a month billed annually for 2,500 executions, Pro €50 for 10,000, Business €667 (self-hosted). The cloud trial needs no card, companies under 20 employees can get 50% off Business, and the Community Edition is free to self-host.

Best for Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace companies: Copilot Studio and Gemini Enterprise

Microsoft Copilot Studio

If your company already licenses Microsoft 365 Copilot ($30 per user per month, paid yearly, for the “for Department” add-on), licensed users can build and use internal agents in Copilot Studio at no extra cost. You need standalone Copilot Studio to publish agents to websites, apps or social channels, or to let unlicensed people use them. That is billed in Copilot Credits: $200 per 25,000-credit pack per month, pay-as-you-go via Azure, or a prepaid plan. Microsoft Copilot also has a lighter “Agent Builder” for quick agents.

Gemini Enterprise

Business edition starts at $21 per seat per month with a 30-day trial, and Google says it does not train on your data. Workflow Builder (formerly Agent Designer), its no-code tool, became generally available on 3 September 2026; October updates added Microsoft Teams, Notion, Salesforce, and Confluence and Jira Data Center connections, plus Gemini 4 Argon.

ChatGPT workspace agents

Teams on ChatGPT Business, Enterprise or Edu can build workspace agents in natural language. ChatGPT Business costs $20 per user per month billed annually or $25 monthly, for two or more users. For how ChatGPT and Gemini differ on agents more broadly, see ChatGPT vs Gemini.

Best ready-made agents for calls and websites: Vida and Expertise.ai

Vida

Vida runs AI agents that answer and make calls and handle texts and email: booking into Google Calendar, transferring calls, sending payment links. Starter is $250 a month for one agent with usage paid as you go; Business 500 is $700 including $500 of usage (Business 1k $1,150, Business 2k $2,050). Voice costs $0.15 a minute and texts $0.06; allowances do not roll over, and extra agents are $250 a month. Vida says it is SOC 2 Type II audited and supports HIPAA workflows with its Advanced Privacy setup and a BAA. See our Vida guide.

Expertise.ai

Expertise.ai runs a website agent for sales and support (chat, voice and video avatar) plus a go-to-market assistant connected to your CRM, email, calendar and around 50 other tools. Its docs say write actions such as outbound messages and CRM changes need approval. The big drawback: no public prices, and every tier is “Book a demo”. Details in our Expertise.ai guide.

Best for enterprise automation: Turbotic (and Relevance AI)

Turbotic’s self-serve Automation AI turns a plain-English description into code, asking questions and testing it. Free includes 100 executions, 100 chats and 3 automations; Basic starts at $14.99 a month billed yearly ($19.99 monthly) for 200 executions and 100 chats. Its orchestration product, which monitors AI agents and UiPath, Blue Prism and Automation Anywhere bots, is sold through sales. See our Turbotic guide.

Relevance AI is the other enterprise option: its pricing page now lists Enterprise only, with 2,000+ integrations, calling and meeting agents, and SSO, RBAC and audit logs.

What happened to OpenAI Agent Builder?

OpenAI launched Agent Builder with AgentKit in October 2025 and told developers on 3 June 2026 that it shuts down on 30 November 2026; ChatKit stays. To migrate, open the workflow, select Code, then Agents SDK, and copy the TypeScript or Python export (the graph is not converted), or paste that export into a new ChatGPT workspace agent and ask it to convert it. OpenAI warns strictly deterministic workflows may not migrate faithfully. Do not start new projects on it.

How to choose an AI agent builder

  1. Build or buy. For answering calls or qualifying website visitors, a ready-made agent beats a custom build.
  2. Follow your data. Microsoft 365 points to Copilot Studio, Google to Gemini Enterprise, a Zapier account full of connections to Zapier Agents.
  3. Decide who maintains it. No-code tools suit ops and marketing teams; n8n and the SDKs need someone technical.
  4. Know the pricing unit and set a cap. Use the table above and a trial week of real work.
  5. Require approvals for risky actions. Anything that sends, pays or deletes should need a human click at first.
  6. Check data terms. Training policy, SOC 2, HIPAA and BAA where relevant, or self-hosting.

Agent instructions are prompts, so the habits in our guide to writing better prompts apply directly. For more tools in this space, browse the AI agents directory or our other guides.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best no-code AI agent builder?

For building your own agents at a low fixed cost, MindStudio: one agent is free, and unlimited agents and runs cost $16 a month billed yearly ($20 monthly), plus model usage at provider cost. Lindy is the better pick if you want a ready-made assistant for inbox, calendar and meetings, and Zapier Agents makes most sense if you already automate with Zapier. Prices at the time of writing.

Is there a free AI agent builder?

Yes. MindStudio Free gives you one agent and 1,000 runs a month (model usage is billed on top), Zapier Agents Free includes 400 activities a month, Turbotic Free includes 100 executions and 100 chats, and n8n's Community Edition is free if you host it yourself. Lindy only gives $50 of credits that last seven days.

Is OpenAI Agent Builder being shut down?

Yes. OpenAI notified developers on 3 June 2026 that Agent Builder is scheduled to shut down on 30 November 2026. ChatKit remains available. You can export each workflow as Agents SDK code (TypeScript or Python) or rebuild it as a ChatGPT workspace agent on a Business, Enterprise or Edu workspace.

How much does it cost to build an AI agent?

No-code builders start at $0 and run roughly $16 to $34 a month for an entry paid plan, before usage. Suite options are per seat: Gemini Enterprise Business from $21 per seat and the Microsoft 365 Copilot add-on at $30 per user per month paid yearly. Ready-made phone agents such as Vida start at $250 a month plus $0.15 per voice minute. Prices at the time of writing.

What is the difference between an AI agent builder and an automation tool like Zapier?

A classic automation runs the same fixed steps every time a trigger fires. An agent is given a goal, instructions and a set of tools, and decides which steps to take. Most platforms now do both: Zapier has Agents next to Zaps, and n8n has agent nodes inside its workflows.
