ElevenLabs Alternatives (2026): Where to Switch and Why
ElevenLabs alternatives by reason for leaving: cost per 1M characters, voice cloning, languages, latency, licences and data use, plus a switching checklist.

The right ElevenLabs alternative depends on why you want to leave. If it costs too much per character, move API traffic to Murf’s Falcon API, Microsoft Azure or Google Cloud. If you want a cheaper voiceover studio, Murf AI. If you are building a low-latency voice agent, Cartesia, or simply stay on ElevenLabs Flash. If you need English corporate narration with curated, licensed voices, WellSaid. If you already build on OpenAI, its text-to-speech API works, but its current TTS models retire in January 2027. If you want a studio whose terms do not include training on your audio, Murf. Prices below are at the time of writing, in USD, checked 23 October 2026.
Starting from scratch rather than switching? Our best AI voice generators ranking is the better read. ElevenLabs and Murf AI are in our AI content tools directory; partner status does not change the picks, and in some cases the honest answer is to stay.
Why people switch from ElevenLabs
ElevenLabs is still the benchmark for voice quality and breadth (our ElevenLabs review explains why), but the same complaints come up again and again:
- Credits go further than you expect, then run out. One credit balance covers every product. Text to speech costs 1 credit per character, but dubbing costs 2,000 to 10,000 credits per minute, music 900 and the voice changer 1,000.
- Overage is expensive. An extra minute of speech costs about $0.20 on Starter, $0.18 on Creator and $0.17 on Pro and above.
- Free is not commercial. The Free plan has no commercial licence, and Professional Voice Cloning starts on Creator ($22 a month).
- Downgrades cost you. Downgrading or cancelling forfeits unused credits at the end of the billing cycle.
- Data use. ElevenLabs’ privacy policy allows it to train models on your inputs and outputs unless you opt out.

If ElevenLabs costs too much: Murf API, Google Cloud or Azure
Here is the like-for-like cost of 1 million characters at the time of writing:
| Option | Cost per 1M characters |
|---|---|
| Google Standard / WaveNet (after 4M free) | $4 |
| Murf API, Falcon | $10 |
| Azure neural (East US; prices vary by region) | $15 |
| OpenAI tts-1 | $15 |
| Google Neural2 (after 1M free) | $16 |
| Google Chirp 3 HD (after 1M free) | $30 |
| Cartesia Scale / Startup (our arithmetic) | ~$37 / ~$39 |
| ElevenLabs API, Flash / v4 | $40 / $80 |
| ElevenLabs Pro / Creator subscription (our arithmetic) | ~$165 / ~$182 |
The twist: ElevenLabs bills API usage in US dollars, not credits, and those rates are far below what subscription credits work out to. If you generate speech from code and pay subscription prices, moving the same workload to ElevenLabs’ API on Flash may cut the bill by roughly three-quarters (our arithmetic) without switching vendor. If you need the lowest price, Murf’s Falcon API has the lowest rate here outside Google’s older Standard and WaveNet voices, with $10 of free credit to test it (Murf AI guide). The drawback of the cloud APIs from Google and Azure is that there is no studio: you need code and a cloud billing account.
If you want a cheaper voiceover studio: Murf AI
If you use ElevenLabs to voice slides, explainers or training videos, Murf AI is the most direct switch. Its editor splits a script into blocks, lets you set voice, speed, pitch, pauses and pronunciation per sentence, and places the voiceover on a timeline next to your media.
Price: Creator costs $19 a month billed yearly or $29 monthly; the monthly Creator Lite tier gives 2 hours of voice generation time (VGT) and 5 projects, with commercial rights. Business costs $66 a month billed yearly or $99 monthly and adds the Business License. The free plan cannot download or export.
Drawback: VGT is charged again when you re-render a changed sub-block, so heavy script edits burn time (voice, style and speed changes are free). Read our Murf AI review for the plan to buy and ElevenLabs vs Murf AI for a head-to-head.
If you need voice cloning on your terms
Cloning sits on very different plans across vendors:
- ElevenLabs: Instant Voice Cloning from Starter; Professional Voice Clones from Creator (1 on Creator and Pro, 3 on Scale, 10 on Business).
- Cartesia: Instant Voice Cloning from the $5 Pro plan; 2 Professional Voice Clone slots on Startup ($49) and 4 on Scale, with free PVC training.
- Google Cloud: Chirp 3 Instant Custom Voice at $60 per 1M characters, which needs a sample plus a fixed recorded consent statement.
- Azure: Personal Voice at $24 per 1M characters, under Limited Access approval.
- OpenAI: recording-based custom voices for eligible customers only.
- Murf and WellSaid: custom voices are enterprise services; Murf states that the customer owns the rights and requires the speaker’s written consent.
Drawback: a clone cannot be exported from ElevenLabs. Plan to re-record samples and get the speaker’s consent again on the new platform.
If you need more languages or accents
The broadest catalogue is Microsoft Azure, with prebuilt neural voices in more than 100 languages and locales. Google’s Chirp 3 HD voices cover about 50 locales. Cartesia’s Sonic-3.6 model covers 44 languages from one model, and Speechify’s API says its Simba 3.5 model covers 48 under one model ID.
Two cautions. WellSaid’s self-serve plans are English only; other languages and translation are Enterprise features. OpenAI’s voices are optimised for English. And ElevenLabs’ own v4 model claims 90+ languages, so a weak accent may be a voice choice, not a platform limit.
Price: Azure neural $15 per 1M characters (East US), Google Chirp 3 HD $30 per 1M.
Drawback: test the exact accent and your product names before you commit. Language counts tell you nothing about how a Brazilian Portuguese or Scottish English voice actually sounds.
If you are building a real-time voice agent
Cartesia says Sonic-3.6 delivers first audio in under 90 ms. Murf says Falcon 2.1 reaches about 100 ms time to first audio, with 11 regional endpoints. Speechify reports 56 ms p50 and 102 ms p90 time to first byte for Simba 3.5, measured on 15 September 2026 in US East. All three are vendor claims.
ElevenLabs is already in that range: Flash v2.5 is about 75 ms, and v4 Turbo about 100 ms median inference. So latency is rarely a real reason to leave. Measure time to first audio from your own region and network before deciding.
Price: Cartesia Pro is $5 a month for 100,000 credits; Speechify’s paid API plans start at $10 a month.
Drawback for OpenAI users: tts-1, tts-1-hd and both gpt-4o-mini-tts snapshots leave the API on 6 January 2027, replaced by gpt-realtime-2.1-mini. Do not start a new integration on tts-1; our AI model retirements roundup tracks the dates.
If you need narration with clear commercial rights: WellSaid
WellSaid suits corporate learning and marketing teams that want a curated catalogue of licensed voices and no licence ambiguity. Its pricing page states that all paid plans include full commercial usage rights, and an API is available with a trial key on request.
Price: Starter is $10 a month billed yearly or $19 monthly, Pro $33 yearly or $49 monthly, and Business $160 per user per month billed yearly (WellSaid pricing).
Drawback: Starter and Pro include English voices only, and the free trial carries no commercial rights. WellSaid is not in our directory and has no tool page.
If you care about how your audio data is used
ElevenLabs’ privacy policy says inputs, outputs and usage data may be used to train its models. You can opt out under Terms and Privacy, then Data use, but the opt-out only applies to future training. Voice data is kept for up to three years after your last interaction, and data is stored in the US.
Murf’s terms of service say it uses your information only for providing the services, and they contain no training clause. That makes Murf the simpler choice for teams with client scripts or internal training content. The cloud APIs from Google, Microsoft and OpenAI fall under each provider’s own enterprise terms; check those directly for your account type.
Drawback: because voice data can be kept for up to three years, set the opt-out now even if you plan to leave.
How to switch from ElevenLabs without losing work
- Export first. Download the audio you still need from History and from Studio projects (MP3 or WAV) before you cancel.
- Time the downgrade. Unused credits are forfeited at the end of the billing cycle, so use them up before the renewal date.
- List every voice you use. Library and cloned voices do not move. Re-clone on the new tool, with the speaker’s consent.
- Rebuild pronunciation rules. Use Murf’s Pronunciation Library or inline IPA on Falcon 2, or SSML on Azure and Google.
- Test cost per finished minute. Run one reference script through two candidates and include re-renders; Murf charges VGT again on re-rendered blocks.
- For API users, add one adapter. Put the new endpoint behind a single interface and A/B it against ElevenLabs before you cut over.
- Check disclosure rules. OpenAI’s usage policies, for example, require telling listeners the voice is AI-generated.
Should you stay on ElevenLabs?
Stay if you need dubbing into 90+ languages, self-serve Professional Voice Cloning, the Voice Library, or music and sound effects in the same account. Stay, too, if your problem is the bill and you generate speech from code: moving that traffic to the API on Flash ($0.04 per 1,000 characters) may fix it. Our ElevenLabs guide walks through the plans and setup. For everyone else, the sections above point to the tool that fixes your specific complaint. More buying advice is in our guides.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best alternative to ElevenLabs?
It depends on why you are leaving. For a cheaper voiceover studio with a timeline editor, Murf AI. For the lowest API cost per character, Murf's Falcon API, Microsoft Azure or Google Cloud. For real-time voice agents, Cartesia. For English corporate narration with licensed voices, WellSaid. If you need dubbing, self-serve professional cloning and music in one account, nothing replaces ElevenLabs yet.
Is there a cheaper alternative to ElevenLabs for text to speech?
Yes, if you can use an API. At the time of writing Murf's Falcon model costs $10 per 1 million characters, Azure neural voices $15 per 1 million (East US) and Google Chirp 3 HD $30 per 1 million after 1 million free characters a month. ElevenLabs' own API is also much cheaper than its subscriptions: $40 per 1 million characters on Flash and $80 on v4, against roughly $165 to $182 per 1 million on the Creator and Pro plans.
Is there a free alternative to ElevenLabs I can use commercially?
Not among the voice studios: Murf's free plan cannot download audio and WellSaid's trial has no commercial rights. Google Cloud (1 million Chirp 3 HD characters a month) and Azure (0.5 million neural characters a month) have free allowances under their normal service terms, but you need code to use them. Cartesia lists its commercial use licence from the $5 Pro plan.
Can I move my cloned voice from ElevenLabs to another tool?
No. Cloned voices and Voice Library voices stay on ElevenLabs. To use the same voice elsewhere you have to record new samples and clone it again on the new platform, with the speaker's consent. Google, for example, requires a recorded consent statement, and Murf requires the speaker's written consent.
Is Murf AI better than ElevenLabs?
For narrated slides and training videos, often yes: Murf's script editor and media timeline are built for that job, and Creator costs $19 a month billed yearly with commercial rights. For voice quality, self-serve cloning, dubbing and audiobooks, ElevenLabs is stronger. Our ElevenLabs vs Murf AI comparison covers the trade-offs in detail.
